My wife created a monster!
I have been crab sitting my wifes hermit crabs for the past 2 months at my place until we find our own place together. She has had hermit crabs for the past 15+ years with some of her current crabs for past 5-7 year range. At one point, before we met, she had 3 crabitats going at once with 15 crabs total between them. So she has been building and changing crabitats for a while. My past crab experience, until recently, was as a kid with the small plastic or wire mesh cage and multi colored gravel. As a kid way before the internet you could only do what you are told by the pet shop and go from there. No one mentioned moulting, proper bedding, humidity, and so forth, even today people don't do the research.
Since the 4 crabbies came to my place, Lil Chicky, Triple H, Shy Guy and Former Yellow Guy (since he switched from a painted shell), I have been reading theses forums frequently to find tons of random information neither of us knew, such as unsalted popcorn being a favorite treat of our little clawed friends. It's all information that is going to make them happier in the short and long term such as varied diet, salt water pool, etc. I like to, as she says, "spoil them" and buy new climby things, try different food mixes (I just read about crabs liking tofu on here) for them and so on. I'm currently being told that they are good with different foods and items for inside their tank, but I still want to get more things and keep adding and expanding, such as a net for a second tier. I guess once we have our own crabitat of our own we can work on theirs more and more. I can see us one upping the crazy cat lady down the street! She created a monster!
In closing I thought I would pop out of my shell and say hi and thank everyone for the information we already received and am looking forward to being part of this forum and sharing.
