How to clean with crabs in the sand

Post by Renata » Tue Feb 19, 2019 10:33 pm

Hi, I’m new to taking care of hermit crabs. I have two crabs. One that just changed shells and dug a hole. I’ve seen him eat and interact so he seems fine. The other I bought from a store and he immediately found a dark corned and dug himself in and I have seen no sign of him resurfacing for 3 days now.
I don’t smell anything decaying so I’m hoping he is recovering from being in a pet store or maybe molting. I think I know where he is but am not entirely sure. I want to change some of the sand out but I scared of disturbing them. What do I do? Do I just clean around the area they are in? It smells a bit musky inside, I want to avoid there being any mold growing since it’s so humid and warm. The sand is only 3 days old.

Bothat PP’s (small)
10 gallon with play sand at least 6 inches
Temp and humidity in the safe zone
Under tank heater
Prime water and salt water in bowls
Bowl for food and scattered veggies nd fruit every night the removed in the morning
Toys, fake plants, hiding spots, climbing logs
Additional shells available

Many thanks!!!

Welcome! No digging unless there's a bacterial bloom or flooding. Just spot cleaning of old food needed. And mold doesn't bother crabs. It's only a problem if you're allergic to mold.
