New crab owner. Trying to identify crab

Post by Babybytc88 » Wed Jul 03, 2019 8:58 pm

Hi I’m a new crab owner of 1. I hate to say it but we just went on vacation to gulf shores and for some reason I agreed to a pet with no research prior. On the way home I spent the 10+ hours researching a lot of time on this site especially. I’m trying to figure out what kind of crab I have so I can make sure conditions are optimal. If anyone could help that would be great. I think it’s an Ecuador but I am probably completely wrong. The light makes him look a different shade than he is LOL

Currently in 75 gallon tank (already had and was empty)

Plexiglass top
6 in substrate 5:1 ratio children’s play sand:coco fiber
Uth Heater size large on side of tank Flukers brand
Cardboard wrapped with aluminum foil around back and side.
Saltwater pool made with instant ocean and dechlorinated water
Freshwater pool also with dechlorinated water.
Climbing stuff fake plants for hiding
Egg crate light diffuser on back wall for climbing with a shelf.
Shells (doesn’t appear to like any) have more ordered waiting on them.
Still in painted shell came in
Feed organic foods at night from safe food list.
Humidity is only about 70% will be adding bubblers to water maybe some moss
Temp is about 78 lowest was 76 highest being 80
Had less than a week working on getting tank up to par ImageImageImage

You are correct, he is an Ecuadorian. He is super cute! Ecuadorians are super picky about their shells. Just offer him shells and that’s all you can do, hope he picks one. Your off to an amazing start, especially with a 75 gal tank. Welcome to the site.

Welcome to crabbing! He's cute!
You didn't mention, but you may have already done this....but is your substrate moistened with dechlor fresh or salt water, so that it is sand castle consistency?

Dechlorinated freshwater. Yes to sand castle consistency. And I mixed it all up together. I have checked every other day to make sure that it’s not flooding. I also mist with dechlorinated freshwater as well.

You can mist down your tank to make the humidity higher, just keep an eye on it so there isn't any flooding or mold building up. Also consider getting your crab a friend or 2 Despite their names they love having company in their tanks. Welcome to the HCA!!!
