New Crab Mom

Post by Sldonley » Sun Jul 07, 2019 4:32 pm

Hi all! We just recently brought home two darling crabs. I am totally new to hermit crabs and this site. I admittedly planned on getting my son a crab during our beach trip this year until I did my research. I set up a nice little crabitat after reviewing many videos and posts about hermit crab care. I still have some work I would like to do in the tank, but so far it's a start. I will admit though that I am struggling with heat. I bought a UTH which I attached to the side of my 10 gallon tank. After a few days with no change I insulated it with foil and cardboard. I also put foil on the mesh lid. The humidity has been around 70-75%, but I just can't get the heat up. I will see how things go and if in another day or 2 it doesn't go up I'll have to look into another UTH I guess. Also I know crabs will hide to destress but 1 of my 2 has been buried since I put them in the tank (3 days ago). I have seen the other one (a PP) out a little at night. He has been in the salt water dish and climbing the driftwood, but so far there is no sign that the other one has even come up. How long is normal before I should worry?

Thanks in advance for the help/advise!

It can weeks to months. Don't go digging. Leave him alone. They are fragile. Maintenance on heat and humidity is difficult in a 10 gallon tank.
Plus, don't worry. We have 30 crabs and getting at least 9 more. We have 6 tanks. They live on their own time. They will take as long as they need. In the meantime, do some research, read the posts on this site. Read up and educate yourself. I'm sure he will be fine. He just needs some time
