Egg Shells

Post by dolphinlover » Wed Jun 02, 2021 12:35 pm

real quick question

I just used 4 eggs for brunch and I saved the shells afterword so I can give them to my hermit babies...It says the shells should be cooked..How do I cook the shells? Just place them in boiling water and give them 10-15 minutes like I would be boiling hard boiled eggs? Never boiled shells before without the egg in it..

Fairly new owner...Yes I read the safe food list...

I don’t think you have to cook them. I have had people tell me you can give them with or without. I personally put mine in the microwave for like 20-30 seconds and then cool them and crush them up.

You can cook if you want, but don't have to. I am not a fan of eggs, and the goo inside particularly grosses me out LOL. I take the shells off of hard cooked eggs only, and save them for my hermies.

I wash mine out and also pop them in the microwave for a minute or so (or until they are dry). Then I put them in my coffee bean grinder and make them into a powder. I always make sure my shells are really dry when I do this so that they don't go bad/mold in the ziplock baggie.

I follow a reptile calcium powder tutorial on youtube. Basically, eggshells are boiled for 10 minutes and then left to air dry or be baked before crushing and given to crabs. It's really simple and cheap and my crabs seem to enjoy it!

Thank you for the idea! I just had a left-over egg shell from making pancakes so I tried this on my crab for the first time. Rinsed the shell, microwaved it 30 seconds, then baked it a few minutes (probably overkill) before letting it cool. She loves it!

Ps- Have you tried giving her eggs? My guys aren't too into fresh foods, but LOVE eggs. I scramble a couple of eggs in a microwave safe bowl and heat them for 1.5 mins and Bam! Scrambled eggs lol. I'm so lazy I know haha! I also get Salad Works salads a lot and make sure to get the hardboiled eggs when I do. I pick the yolks out and save them for the crabbies. They aren't so thrilled about the boiled whites so I eat those lol!
