New crabs! X-Large? Jumbo? And a Second Buddy

Post by hermilove » Fri Apr 08, 2022 5:08 pm

Went to petco today and they had a huge guy! Jumbo or extra large? I didn’t want him to get stuck in a little 10 gallon tank so I brought him home! I also grabbed a second buddy with him as well.

Nice! These guys look like they need a molt. And maybe some shells with round openings too!

The big guy did actually change shells! There’s some that are even bigger some 1 3/4” and 2” so if he still doesn’t feel roomy enough he’s got more choices :)

Absolutely a jumbo!! I hope he does well for you, they have a heck of a time adapting to captivity at this age. I think it's wonderful to give him a fighting chance.

Thanks! I just couldn’t leave him there. I’m hoping he does well. He had apparently been knocking down the wall between them and a corn snake which I only found out at checkout. Image At least they’re not part of a corn snake’s diet….

Update on the big guy! Well I had him in an iso tub after his tunnel collapsed since it was looking like he was going to molt. After about a week in there I let him out feeling horrible he hadn’t actually molted. He ate a big meal then I didn’t see him so I thought he burrowed down to molt on his own. Turns out he surface molted in a coco hut. I’d been sick the past week with Covid and saw a massive hollow BP in the tank today and freaked out. I picked up the coco hut in there and found him thankfully alive on a pile of Exo. And one stinky dead leg. He seems to have lost his shield leg but he looks amazing otherwise. It was odd because the leg was pulled almost all the way out the end tip leg segment but not completely, and second segment was meaty so maybe had trouble removing it so went for the drop. He’s been through a lot though, especially at his age, so I’ll take one lost limb as a win. At least he won’t be playing with snakes anymore now that he’s with me. He’s hardened up but I put him in an iso tub with the remaining exo for the time being. (tossed that leg though, mini stink bomb) I’m glad it looks like he’s pulled through his first molt.

I’d love any opinions on what you think is a good wait time for him in his iso. (If anyone sees this ) He’s ready enough to go back in the open tank as he’s hardened, but he hasn’t finished his exo. My thought was to get him to finish that up, granted there’s a lot of it since he’s a big guy. He ate a good portion already, but also could’ve just been eating the food I put out as well since he seems to have left the cocohut at some point dragging the Bp piece out.

Not to ignore him, the second new guy is buried and hopefully also doing well! That’s always a guessing game until he comes up or doesn’t though so fingers crossed.

If a crab is moving around normally, and eating and drinking other food, he should be good to be added back to the main tank. There is no need to rush it tho. Also remember that when they dig themselves back up, it 'scrubs off' the molting smell, so consider giving everyone a quick dip in the fresh water so nobody smells 'newly molted'.
