Morning all.
New crab owner here. We have 2 crabs (both Caribbean) got at different times. The first (Carl) is much larger and the second (Emma) is smaller. I don't know which are male vs female as we try to not touch them - so our kids came up with these names.
First time they met both their antenna went crazy and Emma retreated in haste. Emma seems to have ptsd from the encounter....
Then Carl - who changed shells 2-3 times in 2-3 days - dug in the substrate and has been under for weeks now. We see (and hear) that he's moving around underground.
Meanwhile - Emma remains 'scared' as she's camped out in one corner log of tank and isn't going to the other side (where there is a a climbing rope + moss ramp to the food / fresh water / salt water bath. We have extra shells nearby for her to explore but she has no interest as it looks as though she fears they may be other crabs...
Our tank has 2 levels as we used a shower caddy thing to provide more surface area and avoid food/water spilling.
Think we got the 10 gallon tank set right: targeting 80/80 temp/humidity, 5:1 playsand:coconut fiber substrate mix at close to 6 inches, salt water bath available, extra shells available.
A few questions:
Carl - if he's molting will he still crawl around at night or will they remain more still? If he is molting, how much bigger can they grow post 1 molt?
Emma - it appears initially she modified her activity schedule to be active when Carl was inactive but now that Carl is under it's like she worries he's around the corner and so she's hiding in a log all the time. She hasn't eaten or drank anything in a week. We realize they will eat/drink when ready (like our kids!) but could she starve to death from the fear of not exploring the tank?
We know crabs are prey animals and inactivity is natural/ok, but Emma seems distressed (even though Carl underground). Thanks for insight.

When a crab is molting underground, they will stay still. The actual molting process doesn't take very long at all. But they will sometimes hang out down there for a while before they molt, and they will usually hang out for a while afterwards. During the before and after, they will often move around down there.
Try offering something like popcorn, put it in different areas of the tank. You will soon know if she is moving around or eating!
