I can't find my crab after molting

Post by yame1324 » Thu Jan 02, 2025 9:15 am

Hi all, my crabs have been living with me for a year now and everything has been fine. My crabs have grown a bit in that time. My biggest crab buried himself in the sand and has been molting for about a month and a half (I was very worried about this, as it usually takes about a month to molt.) I recently went out of town for a few days and today I'm back. The rest of my crabs have already molted, but I haven't found my biggest crab. My oldest crab was using a large white shell as a house, and today I saw my other crab using that large white shell.... Could my big crab have died during the molt and the other crabs dug up his shell or something? I didn't smell any rot from the terrarium and my smaller crabs wouldn't have had time to eat a dead crab in a couple days. Could it be that the crab after molting decided to take a smaller shell than the one it had before? Do crabs burrow again for a few days after molting? I'm very worried about my big crab as I can't find him anywhere :( has anyone had a similar situation?

All of the above are possibilities, which is why it can be hard to tell what happened in situations like this one. A month and a half is long time to be buried however, so unless you see evidence of reemergence and then digging down again your crab may be deceased
