New hermit crab owner!!

Post by alishere » Wed Aug 06, 2025 7:29 pm

Hello! I just got two new hermit crabs (I wanted to save them from a store in Maine ☹️) and want to know what they need! I know they of course need a tank and substrate, what other necessities do they need? I'm also trying to switch their shells immediately, I want to make them as comfortable as possible. Thank you :)

Hey ,
basically, they need freshwater and sea salt water seperately. They drink the freshwater and use the sea salt water to moisten their gills.
They also love climbing things and digging. So your substrate should be deep enough for them to completely dig away.
Temperature should be around 75°F and 80°F at day, can drop down to around 70 at night. Humidity should be between 70 and 80%, they don't mind higher but the risk for mold rises. Do you know the species you got? For food... well they eat almost everything. They need a calcium somehow, i got some crab pallets which include almost everything they need but serve them cucumber and other stuff like banana too.

Hi there!

Check out the basic care sheet. It will help answer a lot of your questions. Happy Crabbing!

Welcome to crabbing and to the site!
As CL77 said, be sure to read through the 'basics' care sheet. And then you can look at individual care sheets if you need more info.

One word of caution re- 'pellet' food, many of the commercial foods contain preservatives that are not considered safe long term. Crabs do best with a varied diet, including animal protein and calcium daily. You can feed many things from your own kitchen - meats, seafood, veggies, fruits, grains, greens, nuts, seeds, eggs, eggshells, etc.
