New to the forum, but been crabbing for a few years!

Post by Rae » Tue Dec 15, 2015 8:53 am

Hello!

Just wanted to say hello, since. I am new here :D . I finally decided to quit 'lurking' and join in on the fun. I currently have 5 PPs and after searching for almost a year, I am finally getting some blueberries...TODAY. I am so excited  !!! I'll be sure to try to post some pictures later on of them :)

p.s. - On a funny note, I asked a petsmart associate if they ever get Ecuadorian Hermit crabs in and she asked if that was a type of shell....lol. Needless to say, they do not. :P

Hi there! Welcome to the HCA! Finding exotics is always exciting! I have found many exotics over the years at the chain stores that suppliers mixed in with the PPs, so every time I go near any petstore I pop in to check. I have found straws, ruggies, Es, an indo, a viola and even a cavi by doing this over the years. It's a worth a look because you never know what you're going to find. Congrats, and welcome! Pictures of your pretty crabbies would be amazing!

It would be interesting to know where you found blues, usually they are either misidentified violas or another species. They are almost impossible to get here. Felix Wang is the only person I know of who is able to export them to the U.S. from Japan at all.

Okay guys....I ordered 'medium' blueberries and they are like the size of a nickle lol. I would love to see what 'small' is. One if them is definently NOT a blueberry, its a viola. Pictures will be coming in about an hour :)

So, I am pretty sure they lied to me lol. I didn't pay that much for the four of them, and like them anyways...so it doesn't matter that much to me. :D
Sorry if these pictures are straight up poop lol, but...

Here is the one I believe to by a viola:

These two I believe to be ruggies? Maybe?

I agree you have one viola, but I'm not sure about the other two. I have a hard time between rugs and blues, especially since some rugs are blue. I don't see stitch marks on the claw that ruggies have.......also the leg doesn't scream ruggie to me in that last pic, and I'm not sure the eyes V out like a rug (but it's hard to tell because it's at an angle). So, in short one viola and I don't what what else you might have there......

I'm so confused :(

I have always had PPs so I've never really have got to look at exotics in person so I'm just questioning what the other 3 are :/

In a few weeks I shall try taking better pictures once they have 'de-stressed' and stuff. I took those pictures quickly while I was putting them in their tank and feeding them...so they kind of look like poop.

If you guys were still wondering where I got these guys, feel free to message me...I don't really want to post exactly where I am lol, >.> I am in the Midwest region though, if that helps. :D

Ok, I'm not the best at ID'ing exotics (as the only thing exotic in Australia is an Aussie  ) but for me the last 3 do look like ruggies; or at least have the profile of a ruggie. However, they don't have any stick markings on them plus they look just like my aussies which is making me swing to them being E's.

So (for me) they look like E's. (Dunno if it is right, just offering my 2 cents)

The last one has 5 'ridges/stiches' on his BP. He is also missing his outer leg. The other two's outer leg covers their BP so I can't really tell how many they have...I am going to guess 5 or 6?, but I can see them as they're walking about. I had to get out a jewelry loupe to see haha

hi Rae,

the first one is a C. violascens juvenile

Picture 2-3 do not show enough species characteristics. I only can guess. My first thought: C. rugosus. Because of the shape and color of the big claw.

The last picture shows a C. rugosus for me,too. Because I think there are some dark spot underneath the eyestalks.
Juvenile C. rugosus are often very light in color....

Species characteristics of C. rugosus and C. purpureus: both species have "riffle" at their big claw. (Edit No 2: but if they are tiny and juvenile not all riffle are formed)
C. rugosus always 7.
C. purpureus always have 5. Never more.

C. rugosus always have darker sport underneath the eyestalks. C. purpureus not.
Well I had posted a self made drawing of all species eyes and eyestlaks. But I do not know when or in which thread...

Edit says: and if they all come in one "order" they can't be C. purpureus. Because C. violascens and C. purpureus do not live in the same area. The change thatb they are C. purpureus is very very very rare.

Explaination:
C. violascens = viola
C. rugosus = ruggie
C. purpureus = blueberry

still it is just a guess.
The details are not enough for me to be 100% sure.

But I am nearly 75% sure. Becuase of the already named reasons and because C. purpureus are very rare.

They are lovely anyway. <3
I love "ruggies" because they stay in small size - compared to other species. And theyx are colorful. Red ones, green ones, mixed colored, white...

That's good! :) Ruggies are the least talked about, mostly because they cause the least amount of problems.

I have to say, that's the first time I've seen Rugs mislabled as Blues, it's always been Violas before this. It's been several years since anyone in the states has been able to get any Blues in. Petland in Canada seem to be able to get them more regularly, but for whatever reason they just aren't making it into the US.
