Well I have one crab that keeps hassling the older one and now its in the older crabs shell and the older crab is in another shell but hopefully alive

Why is this a catastrophe? It's very normal for crabs to dig. To molt, de-stress, or just for fun.orangeinecrab wrote:my old crab is now buried somewhere and I have no clue where in the tank... this is turning into a bit of a catastrophe
I'm not sure if you're saying the one crab stole the older crabs shell or if they've just all been changing shells a lot?? If the crab was attacked, is he injured? How many extra shells do you have? You may want to check out the Preferred Shell Guide.orangeinecrab wrote:moved them into the 33 gallon tank with 9-10 inches of substrate

In the old tank when the older hermit crab came up one of my new ones constantly harassed it and held the lip of its shell and tried forcing the older crab out of its shell. I moved them into a bigger tank and the older crab dug down and a day later I found him under one of the water bowls but the water bowl then fell on top of the crab as there wasn't enough substrate to support the weight of the bowl. I then placed the older crab on the surface of the substrate and the newer crab came over to try and steal the older crabs shell and I moved them both away and when I woke up this morning the newer crab had stolen the older crabs shell (or swapped but unlikely) and the older crab is in a different shell underground somewhere in 9 inches of substrate/CallaLily wrote: Why is this a catastrophe? Did the older crab come up on his own?
If it wasn't a shell fight and the other crabs just seem to be constantly bullying the older crab, can you describe what it is they're doing that has you concerned?
I tried that both times when it came up itself and when I had to get it up and the other crab still attacked it sadlyCallaLily wrote:So there was definitely a shell fight problem going on. Also, when the older crab was suddenly brought to the surface, if he had been prepping for molt, he may have smelled tasty to the other crab. A dip in the fw pool should prevent that (for future reference).
Are you sure he reshelled before digging under?
I have a lot of turbos but need to order a few more bigger ones as I am quite low on the size of shells that they like but there is enough to go around for now and I believe it still has black fingertips so I don't think it needs to molt but maybe it does I'm not to sure but thanks for the helpCallaLily wrote:Hhmm. Definitely look over your extra shells and refer to the preferred shell guide.
If the crab is still harassing him after he resurfaces, you may need to isolate the bully for a time. This will allow him to peacefully get his fill of good foods and extra shells. If he's due for a molt, allow him to complete it there in ISO. Sometimes crabs in need of a molt go a bit shell crazy. Again, only if he's still going after the other crab when it resurfaces.
