Also, many crabbers recommend mixing the coconut fiber with washed play sand from somewhere such as home depot if you want. Most mix a 5:1 ratio play sand to coconut fiber, but you can use whatever proportion you want.

The opening on his shell is about 1 inch and he seals pretty good up in it with his big purple claw if that gives you any idea how big he is. I never thought about mixing coconut fiber and sand. Should I mix it now or when I change the substrate?

No matter what the substrate should be above 6". I think that should be good for your crab, especially if you have a 10 gallon. You can mix it now, provided that he is not under molting. Try to mix it with correctly measured dechlorinated saltwater or dechlorinated freshwater to keep humidity up and to keep it good for burrowing. For future reference, you shouldn't ever need to "deep clean" the tank/remove and replace all the substrate unless there is an infestation or contamination. Otherwise, you can just spot clean waste.
