:D Hey punkin....
I brought home Bernie and Gilbert, slipped them into the tank and my boys got home about an hour later. It only took 15 minutes for them to discover that there were newbies amidst our crabbie clan! They were so excited they took them out right away to play with them a few minutes. I had to make them put them back so the new guys could acclimate to their new home. They went straight for the water dish and fresh red grapes I put in there, and then they headed for the crabby hut for a nap. Haha! They must have been worn out from all the excitement.

Thank you again, punkin!
Good luck with your move back to Austria.
Tara :)

Another 10 in our tanks

Post by Dawn » Tue Jan 17, 2006 11:05 am

We adopted the 10 that were in need of homes in San Bernardino area. 2 straws and 2 equadorians and the rest are purple pinchers. All are doing just fine and all but 2 have been re-named. Peewee is the smallest. he's smaller than the fingernail on my thumb. Tiny little guy but very outgoing for a small one.

Hugo is the biggest guy. Thinking maybe Hugo is a girl as he/she didn't have issues with Ronny but Rose and Tank both gave her a ration for trying to scoot in next to Ronny...Rose and Tank are our two biggest girls. Rose is a Straw and pretty partial to Ronny. Tank is just the biggest girl in the tank and thinks she's the queen.

All are doing just fine and eating. Most have switched shells already except the Ecuadorian I call Buttercup. She's still in a pink spiderman shell. I put a nice couple of whale eyes in there for her but she's not shopping those. She was ACTUALLY looking at turbo shells for a time last night...We're hopeful.

Update: Buttercup attacked Rose during a molt and sadly, Rose (our beloved female straw) has since died. Buttercup went through a horrible disfiguring molt but turne around and remolted. She's doing fine. We've since split out the strawberry crabs and the tiny guys. The straws have their large 95 gallon tank. The big guys have their own 200 gallon tank with a 20 gallon penthouse and the tiny guys have an 85 gallon with penthouse addition.

SADLY

Post by Dawn » Thu Jan 19, 2006 2:01 pm

Sadly, I checked on them last night and Mega didn't make it. Apparently he was a darker colored large Purple Pincher. From his very hairy legs he wasn't approaching a molt. His eyes looked clear and he looked really good just didn't respond to being moved and then moved again. He didn't move around on the way home (I was checking from time to time, deciding names) and when we put him/her in the tank she went to one spot and didn't move. With all the activity in the tank we didn't notice that he/she wasn't moving or going to the food dish. To my other hermies credit no-one bothered Mega at all. She/he just died. I'm confident it wasn't something I did or Crabaddict either.

We're so sad. Hubby is having his little private memorial today. We have a less-than-perfect shell from his native area (Gulf of Mexico) that he'll be interred wearing. It's just too bad he didn't survive the moves.

Four new family members

Post by nora » Mon Mar 13, 2006 2:18 pm

We adopted 5 from HCA adoption site. The previous owner emailed me her address and we exchanged cell numbers. On Feb. 4 my daughter and I drove to her house to pick up our new family members. They were all PP's and were they big! My group are the micro to tiny size. These beauties were tennisball size. Three were up and walking around. Two were molting. The molter came up within 10 days. I had to dig up the other molter because the substrate was molding everywhere. Unfortunately the 5th hermie had been dead and eaten and the shell wasn't even there, only a few scattered limbs. They are all doing great today, and are continually shell swapping to find that perfect fit. This was very rewarding,a great lesson for my daughter, and I will do it again! Nora

I was contacted by NeedAHome through this forum, probably from the Adoptions thread, to adopt her last E.

I successfully adopted her adorable little E on Monday! After placing him in his new home, he wandered around the whole perimeter, and then climbed up to the top of the bonsai to survey his surroundings.

He has three other teeny E's to play with, but he seemed to take most to the other PP ontop of the bonsai. She took really good care of her crabs because he seems really outgoing.

Thanks to HCA for another successful adoption!

Thank you!!

Thank you so much to everyone who replied to my S.O.S!! It really says something about the crabbing community- honestly! I can tell I'm dealing with good people here!

Fortunately, for the crabs, I was able to meet up with a very nice woman today who happily took and whom I know will provide the best home for them possible! I couldn't have done it without everyone's help here, though, and I wanted to thank her and everyone else for their efforts! Imagine what would've happened to these little wonders if no one had replied to my message.... Lord knows that despite my best efforts, they may not have made it. I'm sure I would've screwed something up!!

Anyhow, thanks again y'all. Here's to thriving, healthy crabs who live long, enjoyable lives!!!

For the small amount of time you had the crabs you did GOOD!
Beth even supplied new shells and she was able to watch one change into a very nice turbo. Im already in love with the little guys. The tank is a mess Im getting ready to redo it with all the things I brought yesterday.

Today I adopted two crabs. :) They are both PPs... I'd say they are both Jumbos. My first Jumbo crabs. The nice lady who I had adopted them from was moving soon, and did not have the time to care for them. She gave me a lot of extras. A 10 gal tank, some shells for the big guys, and a lot of other stuff. :)

Thanks for the adoption Donna!

I hope I can get pictures up soon! :)

I had another crab adoption last week. It didn't go quite as smoothly as the first one though!

There were three crabs to be adopted, but before the adoption, one of them went MIA. Then on the day of the adoption, the large cavipe up and did a surface molt and had to go to ISO. And during the exchange, a severe thunderstorm hit and it started hailing!

I actually used my friend as a courier, because he worked close to where the adoptee lived, and then he brought them home to me.

Hi,

Since we've had Elliot for over a month, and he's since destressed AND molted I figured this (CLICKY) could be considered a success story!

We adopted Elliot from the local chapter of HAWS after seeing the post linked above. We didn't get any history on him (how long his owner had him, why he was up for adoption, etc..), but he was pretty lively in his KK when we took him home.

After his molt, he promptly changed out of his painted shell into a pretty green turbo, which I hope to get pics of soon.

I recommend adopting to anyone who has room and the means to do it. Besides knowing that I likely saved Elliot from death, it was a good opportunity to show my kids about respecting pets (i.e. no throw away animals).

Thanks for the opportunity!

I adopted four crabbies, two PPs, an Indo, and a Ruggie, from a woman in Tampa. It's only an hour's drive from my town, so when I saw her post on landhermitcrabs.com, I jumped at the chance to adopt.

At first I was worried, because her methods of crab keeping were obviously very different from mine, but they seem to have done just great in her care. They were all very healthy and alert, and they even had long toenails.

Now Cookie, Cranberry, Gomez, and Cirrus are very happy in their new home. They are all very active and entertaining. I am so happy to have them as my own. Here are pictures of my happy, healthy babies.

My new adoptees

Post by Guest » Sat Oct 21, 2006 3:10 pm

I just want to say.... That I am forever grateful that I posted my willingness to adopt and care for such wonderful little creatures of nature as the Hermit crabs. Someone posted that they had some crabbies for adoption and it just so happened, that my daughter and myself were traveling to that area, as she was going to an open house at one of the colleges in our Wonderful State. Millie was a very wonderful lady and very caring and we made arrangements to meet as we left the college for the adoption to take place. I was so excited...words cannot explain how I felt, and they were some beautiful little babies. They had a little over a 2 hour drive home, but safely watched by my daughter in a carrier and we got them home....readily I gave them a wonderful bath and set them forth into my crabitat...everyone seems excited to see their new roommates and they are excited exploring everything. I just want to say Thank you for allowing me to post of adopting and Millie for such a warm and caring person to have allowed me this wonderful adoption. I will let everyone know how it goes. I told Millie I would also keep in touch and let her know how it goes also! Say wonderful prayers for those little adoptees, I pray they do very well!

Adoptions

Post by Guest » Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:07 am

Hello all!

My first adoptioin was listed in a Yahoo Group by Sabrina, which got me on here, and subsequently Sorejoints and I talked with each other to split the cost, and with Jessica who had the hermies. That happened on Aug 18, 06. We drove for 45 mins or so, and brought home 17 crabbies...(all PP's but one Viola) small to large mediums, a 55 g tank, a 20 l, and lots of extras, as in dishes, shells, foods, climbey things, hidey holes, etc. I just lost one a couple days ago related to molting :( Oh I have 9 and the Viola since I have one, and Sorejoints got the other 7.

Just what seems a couple weeks ago (went so fast I cant remember!) CrystalR PM'd me about being in WI; turns out we were over 3 hrs apart, but she really needed to find homes for her 5 PP's who had/have a little crawley issue...lol She hates bugs in a strong fashioin and is a very busy mom and couldnt do it. After conferring with her daughter, Crystal wanted to bring them to their new home. Hopefully it helped her young one let them go when she saw the new digs..hehe So, as of Nov 11, 06 we now have Lacy, and Spider the irritatable in the 55 with the jessica-PP's, 3 new-ish Straws and some Ruggies. (They were bug free but had a couple baths anyhow) Different story for SmallFry (now in a babylonia) and Shelly who sleeps in odd places and postions, and poor Eyeball, who looks pretty ragged but wont molt. THey get 2 baths far apart each evening and substrate changed every other day. Thats all for now ;)

Of course with all the bad care these poor small creatures get in a lot of stores, I have to bring some home ocassionally from here and there....lol

my new friends

Post by Guest » Mon Nov 20, 2006 2:16 pm

I just adopted 5 hermit crabs yesterday 11/18 from a woman on freecycle in my area. She came to my house and dropped them off with their 20L tank, extra shells, dishes, thermometer, hydrometers, some climbing stuff like a half log, driftwood, and also one UTH. I believe all five are PP's, 3 are definitely female and the two smallest I think are male, but it's tough to say. They range from tiny to medium/large. I wouldn't have been able to adopt these guys if she didn't give me their stuff with them, I already have a 20L with 5 crabs in it and I couldn't pack any more into that tank. So thanks again for coming to my house and giving me all that great stuff. All five are doing great, they ran around all last night and now they have dug under to sleep or maybe even molt. They are all very friendly and used to being handled, they are a real pleasure to have!!! They are obviously well fed, very energetic and pooping all over the place hahaha
