Crabber Since January!
Re: Crabber Since January!
I'm not sure about the water softener, but I know untreated well water is safe because no chlorine or ammonia is added. I'll wait for those in the know to chime in on softened water. Isn't it just salt or potassium that softens the water? My thought on that would be to avoid the softener and use water from an outside spigot, that way you don't have to worry and wonder.
I'm not familiar with Jungle Brand Aquarium Salt. Just checked--it's not the right salt. It is for freshwater aquariums as most fresh water sources in the world do contain trace amounts of salt. This salt does not mimic marine salt as it lacks all the trace minerals found in ocean water. You want a brand of salt that is used for making salt water for salt water aquariums. The most available brand is Instant Ocean, but there are a couple more available brands.
Make sure any pictures of fish on the label are marine fish and not freshwater! Also it should say something like marine salt, or salt water aquarium salt mix, etc.

Oh dear, I hope I haven't harmed my crabs!!
We have had some die but I believe it was PPS. Should I leave what's in there in or remove it while I look for another? We do have a pet store. I will call & see if they have it, otherwise I will need to order it so that could take a while.
Thank you, Mool!!

Re: Crabber Since January!
Our pet store had the Instant Ocean!! That's a relief. Do you think using the wrong one harmed my crabs?
Anyone?!
Anyone?!
Re: Crabber Since January!
I doubt you harmed them, I just don't think you benefitted them.
Re: Crabber Since January!
Thanks, mool. I like the way you said that, & good to know.
Re: Crabber Since January!
I've been working on the new crabitat but it's slow going. I needed to order a few things but there is no hurry since the crabs aren't ready to move yet anyway, so will share pics when it's done. Someday I hope to get some good pics of the crabs. I have 2 that aren't great. Maybe I'll post them sometime anyway.
Re: Crabber Since January!
No, unfortunately it's not. You need a product like instant ocean, or sea chem or any other listed on the dechlor sticky in the food section, that produces ocean water salinity. I made the mistake of buying the jungle stuff before I knew better. It simply doesn't have minerals they need.

Thanks, Rawrgeous!! I did buy instant ocean over the weekend so now they are getting the right stuff. It's quite a challenge meeting all of our crabbie's needs but it is so worth it.
Re: Crabber Since January!
We were able to move 2 of our newest crabs into the new 40B!!
They seemed to like it & explored everywhere! This morning we saw their little footprints all over!! It made us so happy!! We have 3 crabs down in the 10g tank, 2 are molting & the other 1 is distressing, hopefully!
I think I know how to post pics. We shall see. If this works these 2 crabbies are the original 2 that we've had since January, the molters. We haven't been able to get pics of the new crabs so that will have to wait for now.
Thing 1
George who came all the way from Georgia to Minnesota with us in January. I spent the entire trip home reading about hermit crab care. I don't recommend doing it that way now that I know what I know. Our grandson made them a Lego climbing toy but it didn't take long for George to destroy it.
To those of you who know, are they both purple pinchers? We thought they were but.....

Yay! Our tank upgrade was super exciting so I can imagine how much fun you're having. We got our first 2 in Texas for my little brother and brought them home (to Arkansas though, so not quite as far haha) and I did the same thing-- read everything I could on this site and figured out what we needed to get for them. Honestly I'm shocked they made it through the trip and even molted after reading all I have on PPS (they were stuffed in the back of the car with luggage and such and topped over a couple times and even fell out of the car once... yikes, poor little guys ).crabbyjo wrote:We were able to move 2 of our newest crabs into the new 40B!!

I can't help with the species ID-- I've seen pictures of a couple other species and they looked so similar to purple pinchers I couldn't tell the difference, lol. But I love their shells! If they are PPs I want to get a couple of those to offer-- I saw a picture on here of someone else's crab in a white shell that looked like one of those and I THINK it was a PP.
9 PPs (Sandy, Shelly, Franklin, Max Jr., Gusgus, Digdug, Steve, General Crabbington, & Ol' Lady Crabbington)
4 kitties & 2 pups! :)

Hi Tala. I bet there are many people who got their crabs the way we did. We took George into the hotels everynight & put him in the bathroom with the shower on for humidity. Poor guy!! Yours had quite a trip too! LOL

My Violet is in a shell like Thing 1.
My Buggie is the smaller one in that pic and he has not yet changed from his Magpie. He he is on the first day I got him.

Re: Crabber Since January!
Buggie thanks you for the compliment, or he would if he wasn't MIA since mid March. Violet came in that shell and he seems to fit(can close his "door")so I'm not worried about him at the moment. I got a new crab, which I have dubbed Lester. I think he is in a magpie too, but he has now disappered too, and I am not sure. It only took him an hour or so once in the tank to do so. Buggie and Violet were up for a week or so before Buggie disappered. Now Lester, although he was missing a leg tip and I expected it. So fingers crossed for successful molts!
