Oh boy, I've caught the bug (or been pinched by the claw.)

Please post here if you are a new crab owner and someone will be along shortly to welcome you to the HCA! This is also the place to welcome new crabbies to your clan!

Oh boy, I've caught the bug (or been pinched by the claw.)

Going to try this again...

Hello everyone, I've been reading up as much as possible in an effort to do the best I possibly can for the two creatures I've got licking on honey covered QTips right now.

Everyone seems very friendly and helpful around here. I hope to continue to learn more and share some of my positive learning experiences too.

My first great project will be redoing my crabitat. Got everything I need for a false bottom, the correct substrate, levels and moss pits.

Soccer who I think would be classified a medium PP and Kona, who I think would be classified as small PP are going to love their remodel. My girls are excited about helping me with it too.

My son got our first PP in July for his birthday. It was a gift from a friend and I was asked for permission. I said sure, it couldn't be that hard.

After some research (a WikiHow article) we ended up with what was sold as a crab habitat (PetsMart) and 4 total PPs (all from Ocean City Maryland).

After cleaning coconut husk (EcoEarth) up all the time. I bought a small aquarium and we just transferred to that on Sunday.

During the transfer, Coconut fell out of her shell when picked up and a claw came off. I just scooped the substrate, claw, shell around her out and into the trash. I think maybe now it was an exoskeleton, I never looked in the shell. Feeling pretty guilty about that right now.

Last night, Buddy, my sons Bday present, went streaking for all of us to see. We've had him the longest and he was the only one who hadn't changed shells yet, from painted to natural. We thought he was finally going to check out a new shell. Well, while he was out, Kona decided she liked his shell and I found Buddy naked still this morning.

Fast Forward to now, me joining the forum, and hoping I'll still have three crabs alive in the morning. I'll go to the ER forum for more details.

My personality: In for a pinch, in for a pound. (Two pinch puns in one post.)

So much still to learn! As I refer to the crabs as him or her, that's what my kids have labeled them. I haven't even looked at the determining the gender knowledge yet.

Crabs in my life since July:
Buddy (Naked Crab quite possibly a surface molter)
Hermie (or Soccer) his name depends on the day, a happy, healthy (I think) good sized PP.
Kona (formally Kermit), playmate to Hermie, living in Buddy's shell.
Coconut - R.I.P.

Sounds like you have quite the active critters!
Do you have photos of the new setup? :)

Welcome to HCA! These crabs take us for a whirlwind of learning. Sorry to hear of your possible mishap! Perhaps Coconut got lucky and ended up in a warm, moist place. A lot of new crabbers make this mistake. Please read up on molting, and everything else to do with crabbing, as the quest for knowledge is another great aspect of crabbing! PPs are really great crabs, enjoy!
