Hello everyone. I have had my hermit crab for a little over a week now. He has been undergoing molting I believe. He was eating and drinking like crazy before he buried himself.

Often new crabs will dig under to destress from everything they went through between harvesting and getting to you. Typically shipping conditions and stores with bad conditions. Best thing for him is to keep some food and water ready for when he decides to come up - which may be at night when you are sleeping and just wait.

Something you may want to think about is hermit crabs don't do well alone. They are colonial animals and need buddies or they get depressed. Enjoy your new friend. Enjoy a second one too. :-D I have 27. I don't believe in having too many little crabby friends.

So great to meet you. Welcome to the HCA. There is more information than you could ever imagine here to help your crab be as happy and healthy as possible. Happy to have you here.

I will add a link to the care sheets in a second. Gotta find them.

yes I did learn they need a friend much like guinea pigs do better with at least one other piggie.. I will be getting a 10 gallon for christmas from my husband so I can get another hermit crab. I dont think that a 2.5 gallon is big enough for two.

You're correct. Best to wait until you have enough room before picking up another. A 10g is an ok start for small crabs. Keep in mind they can grow pretty quickly and you will need to upgrade. Here's a good guide when trying to figure out how many crabs to a tank. http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 26&t=92541
