New Crab Owner, One is Buried and Doesn't Really Come Out

Post by amoo2000 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 11:54 pm

Hi Everyone!

I recently purchased three hermit crabs and have them in a ten gallon aquarium with humidity/temp guage, heating pad on one tank side, an aquarium hood cover to help hold in humidity, good substrate (coconut fiber + hermit crab sand 50/50 ratio), salt water dish, fresh water dish, food dish, and have all been offering fortified hermit crab food/coconut flakes/fresh fruit the first few days.

Two of three crabs are making appearances (Hans Solo and Leia). But Luke (not so ironcially given his name :), is proving to be antisocial. He has buried himself, and hasn't come up much for eating/drinking/to surface/socialize with the other two (who are always at surface). I know it can take up to two weeks or a little more for crabs to adjust to the rhythms and motions of their new settings, but am a little concerned. I also have read about crabs having different personalities, which I am starting to see in mine. Any help recommended to help make Luke's adjustment easier transition wise (I have only had them for five days, and he has surfaced to hang out with them in shells a bit, but mostly unseen underground). Thanks everyone!

There is a possibility he is molting. This is completely normal! So don't be worried! He could also be coming out at night when you aren't around to see! So if you don't spot him in a couple days then he could be molting or just exploring relaxing or distressing! So don't be worried, it's natural behavior!

Ditto on kadynadair16's reply. Molting is the best thing a crab can do after they come home. They emerge with hairs and repairs! Molting is considered a homecoming milestone.
