My first hermit crabs have finally arrived!

Post by cHorse » Sat Jan 31, 2015 3:05 pm

Today I got four cute PPs, and are already in love with them!
I've decided to name my hermit crabs Obsidian and Perl, and my boyfriend names his Henke and Jeff.

I know Henke is a female, she was very brave and energetic, but have'nt been able to check the rest of them.

All seem to be well, though they are all in need of a good molt, except the littlest one (Perl).

It seemed active and came out of it's shell (which is toooo big for Perl!) when we bought them, but since we came home it has'nt moved a bit. When I poke it it moves a bit but it is'nt in the right position in the shell... Maybe the shell is just too big for it to pull in well? I really hope he/she is well... :(

Perl. S/he does'nt pull in more than this...

Some good food, lots of shells, a lot of peace and quiet should set her straight! It is a good idea to leave crabs alone when they get home, until they molt at least once.

Yeah, I've left them alone to do their stuff. I also put some pb and honey in front of the little one, if it's hard for her/him to get to the food. I really hope it will be alright, everyone except that one has moved around in the tank.

Just give them some quiet time, they come out when ready. Remember, they don't know what is happening to them and the way they deal with it is to hide - somewhere. Also, they nocturnal animals, so watch when the lights go out, you probably see Pearl come out and explore.

Thanks guys :)
I'm not sure he's moved tonight.. As I said I put some food in front of him, it's eaten but perl is lying on it's side (in the same place he was yesterday). I have suspicions that obsidian, who's been very active since we let them in the terrarium, has pushed himself into perls cocohide and eaten the food.. :s

Obsidian has eaten a lot of food, pooped in the food dish and changed shell since we came home. He's quite entertaining lol

Obisidan actually changed shell from a nice fitting green turbo into one of these shells... I was not sure they would be interested in them at all, but obviously they are  They are D-shaped and apparently native to england and scandinavia. Marine hermit crabs here actually like to use them as shell :)

Well, now it seems like Jeff are dying too. He's limp and does'nt move much at all, and has not eaten anything. Poor guys :( It's so frustrating that I can't do anything for them. And on top of that, I won't be able to get more PP:s if they don't make it, as they are not sold in the pet shops here.

I guess the only thing I can do now is hold my thumbs and make sure their conditions are right.

Actually, I don't think there's much more that I can do than wait and see, as it's most likely PPS. But I'll be sure to do that tomorrow anyways, thank you :)

Since you said they're not sold in your pet shops, did you order them?

I bought them on a reptile fair from a company from Czech. The pet stores here only have straws, indos and ruggies right now :/

The little one is definitely dead, smelled him this morning and he did not smell like flowers so to say... :(

The other one dropped his BP tonight and it's probably a small chance that he survives :/

I guess I'll have to get two of another species to accompany the others in a while.

I think your first course of action before getting more crabs should be to try and save the ones you have and figure out what's wrong with them. They're not throw away pets and you should try to nurse them back to health before you get more and they die too because of something that's most likely preventable.

Also read through the care sheets here on the HCA :D Good luck!
