Looks like I am adopting 2

Post by KellyCrabbieLove » Sun Feb 22, 2015 9:53 am

My Craigslist ad got a hit last night. A girl (at least 16 because she was texting me from work but not sure how old) asked me to take her 2 crabs. A large and a medium. One is still in a painted shell. :( She had one of them for a year and the other 4 months. With one still in a painted shell it makes me wonder how well they were taken care of but some people don't know better when it comes to what they offer as extra shells. I remember browsing online for painted shells before I found the HCA and even buying a few of the resin ones when I first bought the crabs.

I am so excited. She said something about bringing them today. I just had to share my excitement with everyone. One question though. Since they have been in captivity as long as they have will they still be at risk of PPS when I get them?

Usually PPS goes away after 2-3 molts after being brought home from the petstore. So going from one forever home to the next with at least some proper care before I'm guessing they may just need to adjust to the new environment eg: de-stressing.

I thought the same but I lost 2 of the 5 I rescued back in late september. They had poor conditions before that.

Then go with pet store PPS regulation. ISO with proper shells and 6-10" of sub and both waters and a bit of everything for food. Let them go through a molt, de-stress, or simply acting normal before putting them in the main tank.

I may have to. I only have the 1 true iso and Hera is in it destressing from her attack and surface molt. She has me worried. I was rearranging the iso and collapsed her tunnel when my kid ran into my leg and almost knocked me over. So I picked her up and made a new little hole for her and covered her with a coconut hut. Over the next several days she slowly buried the coconut hut. I can't see it at all!!! I am fighting digging but I have a really bad feeling about it since it isn't her cave what is keeping the sand from coming in the door? Would she be able to get out from under it if she wanted to?

Hera's a big-ish crab, right? I imagining that by digging down and over from a cocohut she will kick sand up around the hut. Then the hut might sink down as she digs over, which is how she's got the hut buried. She would need to dig almost as deep as the hut is tall, and as far as the hut is wide in order to bury the hut. That much digging sounds healthy, and I think she has taken matters into her own hand because she feels healthy enough to do so.
What was she doing before this, after you had put her in ISO? Did she eat or drink any? Was she eating exo?

She is a small large. She ate her iso plus some I had left over from another hermit's molt. I have both kinds of water in there but I haven't caught her up drinking - or up at all since she dug down. I tossed some krill in and it seems that some of it has been eaten but it could be my memory failing. I am about to go do a head count and always check the iso when I do. Maybe she'll be up to surprise me.

Nope...

Her having dug herself down is really the best thing. I hope she got nice and deep and comfy!

I just caught her up!!!!! I scared the crap out of her because I squealed like a little kid on Christmas when I saw her. Oops!!!

She was eating a mix of stuff I put in from HCP. This is what happened when I saw her. Image lol.she flew into her shell so fast it was like a road runner cartoon. There might as well have been a hermit crab shaped cloud where she had been. Lol

She kicked all kinds of sand into the lid I had in there of HCP stuff so I have to refill it tomorrow. I filled her fw again just now. She refused to come out. She was not impressed. I didn't mess with her. I didn't want to stress her more but I am so relieved.

There's still going to be a de-stressing period from the move. Especially if they're coming from poor conditions. I'm not sure you could call it PPS but there's still a risk they won't adjust for whatever reason.

The girl with the 2 decided 30 min was too long a drive and gave them to a pet store. I think I am going to be sick.

Can you find out which pet store?
I've had this happen a few times with the HCA adoptions. :(
