Hi everyone I'm new to this forum and newish to hermit crabs. I have owned one in years but decided to start a new little gang. I've set up my crabitat and wanted to get thoughts. It's a 10 gal. I got the temp up to 80 and humidity runs 75-80%. I have 4 crabs in there. 2 tiny, 2 small. They're named Itsy, Nigel, Jaws and Pepsi. All are moving around at night. Itsy is the one who molted immediately after bring it home last week. She moved for the first time today. I think they are eating but I haven't seen it. Jaws and Nigel will come out when I'm holding them. Pepsi and Itsy, not so much. Anyway here are some pics.

What's your substrate? Is that coconut fiber or something else? It looks really nice but you want your sub to be at least 6" and think that half log is pine. Someone recently told me on the forum in another thread that they are poisonous to the crabs.
Re: Beginning of a crabitat
It's Eco earth mixed with pink calcisand. I'm at 5" now. I can add some more. I'll double check the log. I got it right out of the hermit crab section. So annoying! I put the climbing stuff in and Jaws immediately went up. I'll need to do some more second level.

Re: Beginning of a crabitat
Please remove that sub. Calcisand hardens when wet and can trap the crabs underground and even I n their shells and kill them. A good mix of play sand ($4 a bag at the hardware store) and EE is most commonly used. 5 parts sand to 1 part EE. 6in minimum and deeper the bigger your crabs. It is sooo much cheaper than the stuff at the pet store. Actually most of the items "for hermit crabs" are junk. How do you treat your water?
#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.

I use dechlorinator for both waters and instant ocean for salt water.
