Hey everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself. The wife and I had hermit crabs for a while years ago when our kids were smaller, but had to give it up. Now the kids are both teens. Wow where did the time go. Anyway, now I'm putting together another crabitat. I have been lurking for a while and will continue to just soaking up as much knowledge as I can. Then once the tat is up and stable I'll be looking for some crabs to fill it. So thanks for the great site and all the amazing info.!

Welcome back to the Wonderful World of Crabbing! Once you've been bitten (not literally  ) by the hermit crab bug, it's hard to stay away. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks guys. It's going to be a slow process as most of my time and resources are spoken for fixing up & remodeling the house. I did just get a box from Amazon with an UTH and water conditioners, so I'm getting there.

So I got my UTH installed and sand substrate in the tat. And after almost a week everything is stable. Coolest spot staying 76-78 with the warmest just 88...that seems like a pretty good temperature gradient. Humidity has hovered at 80 for all this time, but today wants to settle at 78...again not bad seems like a weekly/semi-weekly misting should be all I need. All in all I will take it.

Looks like the tat will be ready in plenty of time for adoptees from that mass adoption effort next month. I just need to verify that I have shells the right size and get food ordered from hugsforhermits then I'm all set. Thanks for all the knowledge you all share.

So we brought 2 little PPs home on Tuesday. My 13yr Old, bless her heart, in the store says yuck dad painted shells are sooo ugly. Lol. Not sure what the store people thought. Unfortunately all the hermits were in painted shells.

Anyway, we brought 2 teeny to small PPs home. The smaller one, no names yet, spent about 48 hrs exploring, eating, etc and then promptly dug down. The larger one swapped shells and seems content to just curl up and do well nothing. I had to move him this morning and besides a little shifting in his shell nothing. By this afternoon he was back in his spot. Apparently I'm not the only one who likes staycations.
