Getting 3-4 new crabs! Any advice?

Post by kadynadair16 » Fri Oct 30, 2015 3:33 pm

Hey everyone! I'm adopting some crabs that a lady doesn't want anymore. It sounds like she's kept them in pretty ok conditions. She has a 10g with ecoearth , no painted shells, one crab is molting rn so I'm guessing her dirt is deep enough. Anyways I'm getting them sometime next week and I was wondering if anyone has advice on how to keep the crabs with as little stress as possible. Or anything else that would be helpful! Thanks in advance!

Resist the urge to handle them for a few months. They get stressed easily. Temp 83°F humidity 83% RH. Lots of spare shells. Enjoy watching them. They are like a tv sometimes. :)

Also, don't take the molting crab. You probably know this, but you should wait till it is finished to avoid harming him/her.

Also, do you guys think you could help me figure out the tank situation? So I have four hermits in a 29 gallon rn. And I have a ten gallon I have been saving for Iso. She is giving me her 10 gallon as I previously stated and I guess I'm just wondering where to put the new crabs so I don't over crowd. Is it okay to keep all the new ones in a 10g or do I need to split them up , or something. Help? Also because its getting cooler my temp has bee
n in the high 70s to low 80s ( 77-82) is this okay or do I need to find somehow to make it warmer? Thanks.

3-4 is too many for a 10 gallon tank. So you have two 10-gallons, and one 29-gal., correct? It really depends on how many crabs you currently have in each tank. I'd say 2 in each 10 gallon (possibly 3 temporarily if they are very tiny). maybe 5 small-medium crabs in a 29 gal.?

Also, your temp. seems in the ideal range.

Do I need an iso tank?

Oh yeah.... I recommend using the 10 gallon (assuming that you need this space for crabs) and purchase a small kritter keeper, which you can place in the 29 gal. when necessary for an iso.
