Hello everyone :-) I am new to the forum, been stalking a few build posts and thought I should introduce myself. As of right now I do not have any hermit crabs, mainly because I believe in researching new pets, building an appropriate habitat, THEN getting said pet. This comes from years of fishkeeping (mainly bettas-no tiny cups in this house) but my family own or have owned a wide variety of animals and crabs are the newest interest. I was looking at other types, red claws, vampire crabs... but red claws are all wild caught and have a high tendency to die. That and finding any information on them past basic "they eat anything" is borderline impossible which i think contributes to the death numbers. When i can find more scientific information on thier actual habitat and feeding preferences then maybe i will give them a whirl.

So then came hermit crabs. My mother kept some many many years ago, they buried themselves and never came back up. Im assuming she did something wrong, and have no intentions of repeating her mistakes. My son saw them at the petstore (he is four) and that has brought me here. I know, the dreaded child pet excuse. Do not fear, he may like to pet his faveorite betta but that does not mean I allow it. No matter how much Jenks likes it... crazy fish... Anyways hes very good with his fish, remembers to feed them morning and night, turns thier lights on with assistance and talks to them. I do the rest, planting tanks, rescaping when they get bored, maintaining water ect and making sure Jenks pet shrimp are happy. Hes not a normal betta. I know.

Ok back to the reason im here, hermit crabs. I have gotten the basics but do not trust the tiny critter keepers the pet stores think they will be happy in. I feel like a 5 gallon is way too small. So for now I will continue stalking the builds in this forum, until i can come up with something they will be happy in, and find a place to put them... the fish tanks are taking up most space atm.. im sure noone will notice another one... i dont have a problem... i can stop at any time... >.<

Only question for now, would a 20high work or should i think bigger?

I'm glad you researched great hermit crab care and you're ready to take on a few crabby companions! I own three PP's in a 10 gallon tank and they are all very small. However if you can get a larger tank, definitely do so!

I'd suggest a 29g rather than a 20H (30x12x18 vs 24x13x16). The extra length provides more tunneling room, more room for pools, etc., and the extra 2" depth will allow for a deeper substrate while still offering plenty of "air space" for climbing features.

Awesome. I love an animal I can actually find information on. Some of the others are very difficult to get any good information on. I have questions but ill stick them in the appropriate forum. Thabks for the welcome :-)
