Lost Pirate's End

Post by nchmi28 » Sat Oct 15, 2016 6:01 pm

Hi everyone, my son and I are new to hermit crabs. To let you know where my experiences lie, in our house we have 5 planted aquariums, a fairy garden and a few small terrariums, as well as many house plants. My almost 8yo son, Ryeik, lost his betta fish named Little Mack, after being room mates for nearly 3 years. Little Mack lived in a 10 gallon aquarium which is on the night stand, next to my son's bed. While he and I were discussing what he would like to do with his tank, he brought up the hermit crabs that he saw in a gift shop when we were vacationing in Florida. So I began to do some research which brought me here.
We have set up our new crabs' home and plan on purchasing them tonight. Here are some pictures of our new crabitat.

The substrate is 1/2 coconut fiber & sand mix, and silica sand. I know the crabs will probably not keep the "Beach" area seperate from the rest of the substrate, byt that's how we are starting out.
In the freshwater container, I have a jet lifter type bubbler system to carry water from the deep part of the reservoir up to the a shallow spillway. I have java moss under the plastic mesh. My hopes are that the moss will fill in and grow up through the mesh. The crabs can graze on it if they want.
Since I am very much a plant person I was disappointed to learn that real plants don't fair well with the crabs. I'm thinking of using a suction shower cup to hold a pothos vine up on the tank side. I'm going to have a braided cotton rope going down into the freshwater reservoir, to wick water up to the plant to keep it watered. I think this will also raise the humidity in the tank. I have vine clippings in water right now and will plant them once they sprout roots.
On the shopping list for tonight: a heater, some salt water and 3 crabs.
Any thoughts or advice are welcome.

Welcome! :) If you really want some live plants growing in your tank, I would recommend having a little seperate area with chia seeds. I know others have planted these and have had success!

The new crabs are home and doing well. Their names are Hide-ie, Swim-ie & Climb-ie. My son named them for the first thing they did after entering the crabitat.

I've read that the painted shells are not good for them, so once they change out of them, into one of the natural ones I've provided, I'll remove the painted ones.
