What to do...

Post by kieagcarm » Wed Oct 26, 2016 7:16 pm

So a friend just called me, at her work today someone told her about some small hermits they are planning to get rid of, but by getting rid of they mean to let them go in the woods by a creek. How absurd. I told her tomorrow to tell the guy I'll take them. They will just die if they do that and it's cruel. The temp is only 47 right now, not to mention all the hazards. Sui maybe I'll get to rescue these guys before it's too late

I definitely hope you get to take the lil guys home with you! Introducing non- native species to an area is dangerous anyways. Bah. Some people.

I would suggest planning on an upgrade if you're going to take them, so they don't get overcrowded.

How many potential new crabs? Most recommend about 4-5 in a 20 gallon, overcrowding could lead to more bad molts due to the fact they could run into each other underground.

I'm not sure how many, but mom came home with a new crab so now I guess I can't save the poor things and they will have to try and survive. I now have 4 3 on the small side of medium and a tiny babyImage that's Persephone the baby, Image this is bellatrix the newbie, penny and Dixon are not out for a pic.

I'm just saying that with the more crabs you have in a smaller tank the more potential there is for a bad molt.

If it is possible, you could see if they could put something up on the adoptions forum maybe?

Ask them to give you their tank too. You'll probably have to upgrade the substrate and such, but having the tank will be one less expense and you won't have to worry about over-crowding your current tank.

Wow. Some people just never think. These kinds of people may also be the kind that take on a new pet then lose interest and abandon them like dogs, cats, etc I really REALLY hope they make at least a responsible decision and post on the adoption forum.

So I just talked To her, here is the situation... They have three tiny tiny crabs in a critter keeper, the kind they got on vacation. They have aquarium pebbles in it, no hide hole and no shells other than what they are in. They have had then since summer. If I don't want them then they are letting them go on Sunday. I can rescue then and over crowd my guys, with the hopes of in a year when we sell this house I get a big tank. That's the best I can do. With 9 people living in this 5 bed home plus three cats and a huge dog, we have no room for anything bigger than what I have now. I feel awful. I could put them in Athens tank when she comes up and put her in the big tank. Any suggestions? Obviously these are sorry individuals and they won't even post an ad on craigslist. Now that I love these creatures, I will feel like I contributed to their death
