New PP!!!!!!!
So about 2 weeks my mom brought home an adorable little PP! We think they are a female. Currently I am calling her Penelope. Any Greek mythology related name suggestions? About 4 days after we put her into our tank, my mom found one of the bigger ones on top of her while she was in our big brown log. My mom theorized that they were eating the calcium of her original shell, and smelling her because she was so new. She now has a new shell on and we have not had a problem since!

Whenever you put a new crab into your tank (provided you have the space), I recommend you gently dip them in the freshwater of the current tank. That way they smell like the tank. More than likely they are probably establishing dominance. The tank dynamics change whenever you add a crab to the tank.

I have a 60 gallon tank and at most 5 crabs, so space isn't a problem.

I've been using names from Shakespeare. Currently we have Hermia and Helena, and one day I will probably adopt a few males and name them Demetrius and Lysander. Ironic I know, since these guys will probably never breed, but I found it amusing. My husband suggested Digger and Ms. Crabby. Maybe for the next few crabs...

Thanks! I thought so too. I was, in the end, outvoted by my son, who identified strongly with our first male crab and insisted we call him Branch. Ah well, happy kids are more important than a cool theme. Maybe next crab I'll get will be named Lysander.brotocrab wrote:Hermias_mom, neat theme!

More new crabs! We actually weren't going to adopt any, but their humidity was only at 40%, and they were in painted shells!! :crybaby: I couldn't leave them in such horrible condition! My sister named them Joseph and Mosis, sticking with the theme. We are hoping that they will change out of thier toxic, painted shells soon.

Joseph (one in butterfly shell) changed out of his old painted shell! I haven't seen him in his new shell yet, though.

Thanks! Moses has a turtle shell clay piece on his shell, and I'm worried that the extra weight will hurt him even more. We do have small shells for him, so I'm pretty sure he will change soon!
