So as you guys know from my previous post about being a crab mommy, I went out and bought a crab today. I purchased a PP from a place called Pet Supplies Plus, and all of their animals looked healthy, even though their substrate wasn't very deep. I can toss a guess that pet shops don't want all their crabs hid underground or moulting when people are trying to buy them. Either way, I mentioned it and they were friendly and professional but didn't seem to know why they didn't have deep sub. My friend came along and we named this guy crab Lunie. I checked him for gonopores and he had none. So he's a dude. Woooooo! It's evening here but I decided that I was going to take a picture (with my crummy laptop camera) of the tank and Lunie himself. It's interesting to see that he's almost all purple except for his last sections of his legs and his leg that covers his claw when he's retracted.
The tank:

Right now it's almost 11 pm and my room is dark. Lunie either is zonked and resting, or he's eating some thoroughly rinsed anchovies because I hear absolutely nothing. I really hope that he chooses a new shell soon. The shell that he came in is lacquered and I absolutely hate it. It's also a murex and even though I LOVE murex, this one keeps dumping its water. I already witnessed Lunie eating and drinking, which means he probably needed to refresh himself a LOT.
Above all, I'm just really happy that I was able to get him out of a store and let him have the comfort of the darkness and the moisture and warmth that he really needs. Tank cycle is really stable too, which is an added bonus and since most of us will be on vacation and when I give my brother the informal instruction sheet he won't have to be a mother hen to the temp and humidity. That food bowl will be full with non spoiling food for the trip and since crabs eat less than birds (quasipun intended) I feel comfortable that he won't have to figure out how to feed Lunie.
Woo! I'm ready to either create more tank furniture or play with him depending on his activity/location when I wake up tomorrow! So for now, goodnight!
Meet Lunie
