Meet my new three (and probably last)

Post by C_fiesta » Sun Aug 06, 2017 6:29 pm

Adopted these new three from a good home (of 3 weeks). The owner was starting a new job and didn't think she had time for them. I have her transport instructions and each of us drove 1.5 hours to meet in the middle.

Here are Henry, Jules, and Karen.
Henry (land snail shell) is huge compared to my others! His shell opening is an inch, but he is too big for it. I think his leg span is 2 inches. That makes him a large, right? I can't find the size chart. I can't believe how resourceful he is with those large legs! And quick! It's a little frightening.

Karen (turbo) is about the size of my others, a medium/small. She appears docile.

Jules (painted shell) is small, but part of that is she is missing two leg nodes. I think it's old wounds. She had to be dug up to be transported. I was planning on ISOing her, but since she's pretty active and was able to dig before, I put her in the main tank since there is lots of space and it's all set up right. I hope that's right. She has a molt sac, so she's definitely getting ready to molt soon.

I dipped them all in fresh water and added them to the tank. There was a bit of "boxing" going on between Henry (the big one) and Jules (the missing leg one). I was on a stressful standby with a ruler ready to intervene if necessary. They held out their claws in the air, antennas going crazy, but eventually passed each other in peace. This happened twice. Is this just a dominance display? I could be wrong, but it almost seems like the smaller one Jules could be the instagator.

My newbie Lassie was up high on a cholla wood investigating this whole thing. My other two are still burried.

This will be my last adoption. I think 6 in my 55 is enough. Stressful happenings here! I SO want everyone to get along. I'm worried about shell and territory fights. I guess I'll be stressed about it until it happens?

Any words of encouragement, advice, or education are welcome! ImageImageImageImageImage

So, I found the size chart and took measurements of my four who are up.
It only took 16 thousand tries. I think Henry (1st) is a Medium almost large, Lassie (3rd) is a Medium, and the other two are smalls.

I spotted Gus, my littlest, up tonight. I grabbed a pic. Took forever because he is so shy. First time touching him/taking a picture since I got him three weeks ago. I am using a red LED for nighttime viewing (a new addition), so far it works great! Best $5 I've spent yet because now I can turn on a light at night to see them without them running away! Congratulations on the newbies! I have a feeling that you will be getting another or larger tank soon!

That one definitely has a gel leg! That's great news, it's in the process of regrowing :)

Just want to clarify that you dipped them into the freshwater of the tank before adding them. :)

Edit: I have a moon light over my crabitats. It looks really cool - made by exoterra. I bought it on Amazon. It simulates natural moonlight. I hang it on the ceiling of my crab room.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

If you look, you can see it's shaped like a tiny leg. Also, it's light peach and translucent in color. Molt sacs are usually black, and I think they're located on the crab's left(?) side. The gel leg is growing right where the crab is missing that leg, so that's another clue. Pretty cool, huh? Enjoy and take lots of pics, because once the crabs are in good conditions they shouldn't be dropping or losing legs, so unless you adopt again, it may be a while before you see another gel leg growing in your tank. :)

Hmm...good point! She's been down since I took this picture, so as soon as I see her up again I'll take more pictures! Image

No, no, no! I CAN'T do any more tanks! Not until we move out of our apartment. (This isn't me yelling at you, it's me yelling at myself, hehe). But I will admit every time I look at my tank it seems smaller and smaller. Hmm...what a conundrum. What I AM planning on doing in the next few months is add my 20 gal as a topper and increase the sub a few inches. But that's it! That will still give them more space, right? That's all I can do until we move (which will be approximately 1-2 years). Also, NO more crabbies as long as my current ones are living in my current set up.

Kewl, I'm so happy I got the picture of the gel leg/numb then. I definitely dipped them in freshwater as soon as I brought them home. :)
