What does your tank look like? How long have you been crabbing?

unfortunately I have to make an appointment with an allergist before moving forward. Wodesorel informed me of the possible ways I could get a reaction from them with having a shellfish allergy.

I wanted to get some ideas for a great habitat for the HC's before building it. I really like what this person has done.

I had hermit crabs when I was a kid, but not since. I have been thinking about adopting them for a few years now and I know that I could give them a great home. I also know they take a lot of care and I would like to give that to them.

hi chris! welcome to the forum.

im glad you're excited to go above and beyond to provide the best quality of life for your future hermit crabs, but i have to say i think they're actually very easy pets for the most part. really the only parts that are any work are setting up their tat, which for many people is a 1 time thing, and if you choose to make your own food which i highly recommend, processing batches of food is occasionally some work. other than that, once you get the crabitat set up, its pretty much just putting in food and the occasional water change!

anyways i hope your allergy doesn't prevent you from adopting. as an allergy sufferer myself i know how important it is to make sure any pet you adopt will not cause you to have health problems. i would say though that your shellfish allergies may not be a problem. most of us here have a hands-off policy when it comes to handling so unless you were expecting to handle them you won't be exposed that way. as far as i can see the main risk would be if youre handling shrimp to either feed them or maybe its in a mix you are feeding.

anyways, welcome and hope you can get some crabs! when i was looking for crabs i was able to meet up with some ppl looking to rehome on the forums so im sure you will find some to adopt pretty soon

Your first step is definitely making sure you aren't allergic for any reason either by the crabs or their foods. Depending on how severe your allergies are to shellfish you may be able to substitute the shellfish items for other things. I'm sure a lot of people would be able to help you out with their diet.

Once you get the all clear from your doctor you can start working on your crabitat. I'm glad you liked my experiment tank. I love to make try different things. I think that's fun. Take your time and plan out the tank and build it over a few weekends.

It's awesome you want to adopt instead of buy. If you do not see any local listings on here I have found crabs on Craig's list and my wife even got them from co-workers too. We have had a way better success rate with adopted crabs compared to store bought as well! As long as you are in no hurry with a bit of searching and luck you will find some.
