Was given 3 purple pinchers

Post by Boxraddict » Wed Apr 01, 2020 6:09 pm

So I was given 3 hermit crabs purple pinchers. They came in a 10 gallon. One has died today, the others I see in the coconut huts. I’m going to wait a few weeks and if the two survive the quarantine I might add them to a new 55. Then I hope to bring home but quarantine 1-2 more before ultimately adding them as friends for them. If 3-4 good in a 55?

thoughts on hamster wheels?

Moss pits needed?

Where how do you offer the Extra shells? I mean do you Scattered the empty shells around the tank or in one spot?

Three to four hermits is reasonable for a fifty-five.

Hamster wheels and moss pits are excellent for enrichment and the latter has the bonus of boosting humidity.

It's up to you how you want to offer shells since either method works just fine. Some crabbers like to keep them in a container so they don't get dirty.

And they will go into the container to get a new shell?

What if I just keep the 2 crabs? I’ve got options:

Exo Terra 24x18x12
29 gallon
55 gallon

Yes, they will. You may do a forum search for “shell shops” to see how other members’ crabs like it.

Also, any of those tank options would do fine for two crabs.

The two are alive and appear active as can be right now.
One is in a glazed glass shell one of those fake shells I think like the ones painted like soccer balls or basketballs then glazed... ugh

I got 8 natural ones on the way . I mean The shell he’s in is not ideal but I must wait for him to come out of it next molt but for now unfortunately he’s in a cartoonish glass shell.

May I post pics of the setup and what not?

Hi!
Your pic didn't post. The easiest way to post pics is to download the Tapatalk app, and post pics from there. Or if you post a pic to a photo sharing site and give the link, that would work too. Image

That should work.

It’s only a zoomed 10 gallon. So there’s only so much room to work with. They are buried beneath the substrate.

Just a note, the substrate should be at least 6" deep, or 3x the height of your biggest crabby, which ever is deeper. If you have buried crabs, you can add an inch of substrate per day on top, just don't pack it down.

Looks like your are off to a good start. Be sure to read through the care sheets, there is a ton of really good info in those pages.
Like CrabbyLover77 said, your sub should be at least 6 inches, or three times as deep as your largest crab, whichever is deeper. I can't tell what type of sand you have, but calcium sand isn't appropriate (it can turn to cement when wet). Most of us use a mix of play sand and EE (coco fiber). 5 parts play sand to 1 part EE is the most common mix, but it doesn't have to be exact. It should be moist enough to hold it's shape but not so wet that water pools in the bottom.
It's hard to tell how deep your water dishes are, but they should be deep enough that the crabs can fully submerge but also have a way to climb out.
As for the size of tank....whatever you start with...you will always want bigger! LOL! I started with a 10, then went to a 20, and now have a 55 gallon!

Hi,

Thank you so much! The left is flukers beach sand sold for hermit crabs. It came with that and a brick of coco earth.

I ended up a full setup as a bday gift. Someone knew I am into reptiles/critters and so they gave me these. Even though I wasn’t looking into getting a new pet currently.

How many are in your 55?

The Fluker's Hermit Beach is safe, but expensive. You'll get much better bang for your buck if you purchase play sand by the 50 pound bag. You can always just add it to what you currently have.

I only have two crabs, Sonny and Cher. I have had them for 9 years. I did add a third crab that someone was selling for $10 on the swap and shop, but the poor thing had not been kept in proper conditions and died not long after I got it. Yes, a 55 gallon could hold more crabs, but not many come on the local pages for adoption. So Sonny and Cher just have a nice roomy home! LOL!

Only thing I think are eyesores are the driftwood pieces in the pools

I am going to get craft canvas mesh instead but on the other hAnd they thoroughly enjoyed climbing them in and out of the salt. Not the fresh yet. But it works,...

Only thing not certain of Is would wood affect the salt pool at all..

It may leech tannins and organic material into the pools but nothing harmful. However wood that is submerged indefinitely may rot.
