Soon to be crab owner with a couple questions!

Hello! My friend who has hermit crabs directed me here and I’ve been learning so much!
So far I just have an empty 29g tank and I’m currently gathering supplies/researching. Most of my questions have been answered by searching here, but I still had a couple:

Crab numbers — can there be an odd amount of crabs or do they each need a buddy? Would 3 be fine?

Heat mats — I figured I’d go with the recommended ultratherm heat mats, but I’m unsure about size. I can’t remember where I found it, but I read somewhere that the 6x23 would be good for a tank my size. They’re out of stock everywhere, would an 11” be too tall? It would be a tight fit assuming I’d have between 6-8 inches of substrate. If it overlaps the substrate by and inch would that be too drying?

Thanks so much!

If you are in the US, the bean farm currently has them in stock. That's where I got mine. Works well so far for my 20 gal h. You will want to insulate it, and I personally always recommend a thermostat with any kind of temperature device.

Huh the page must have been cached for me earlier. I reloaded it and now it says that. Sorry :(

I can go ahead and answer the why not to overlap the substrate. You risk a big thermal differential across the glass. The thermal differential can lead to cracking. It's not a guaranteed issue, but it's the main risk I could see.

Thanks! I thought so, just figured I’d double check!
