HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hi!! I want to reset my crabitat. I’ve only had the crabs maybe about a week but I can see it’s not up to their liking. I want to redo my tank but I am worried bc all of them don’t like to surface. I know I need to leave them in there for a little bit longer to destress but since only one or two surface each day (never the same ones) how should I go about on creating a better crabitat for them?

Do you think I could at least set up the section that I know for a fact they are not at while they’re under the substrate?

I do know I need to add more substrate but they’re always under during the day time.

Crabs often move once they get underground...so there really isn't any way to know for sure where they are (or aren't LOL). And if they are molting, not just de-stressing, you can cause a lot of problems digging them up.
You can add up to an inch of sub per day, as long as you don't pack it down.
What else are you wanting to do for your re-do?

After seeing everyone’s setup I know I’m lacking a better heating system I have two smaller uth on the side but I see ultratherm might be the way to go. I definitely want to add more substrate and I want to move substrate away from one side so I can give them better water bowls. The ones I have now I realize aren’t deep enough for the bigger one and too big for the smaller one. I have 2 fresh water different sizes and one salt water. I tilt the salt water and added sea shells to the dish so it can be easier to enter and exit

I just installed an air pump waiting for a splitting connection so I can have it both fresh and salt water!

what is rubbing? Do you mean tubing? If you have a glass lid you can cut little pieces out of the plastic part on the back for them. If you have a mesh lid you would have to use pliers to cut a little bit of the mesh to fit the tubing through

I was looking around the forums for this very same question. I wasn't sure how to go about changing my sand to add coconut sub to it, but with only having 4 of them for less than a week, I'm worried about how much stress it would put them through in such a short time, but at the same time I feel like it would help keep them happy with the humidity being more to their liking than having to spray bottled water in multiple times a day. (Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread!)

If you have any crabs under, you can add 1" of sub per day just don't pack it down. I had the same issue in my 20 gal a while back. I didn't have enough ee in it. I just put the ee right on top. The crabs do so much digging they mixed it in for me!
