Molting for months

Post by Hermit lover 360 » Fri Oct 23, 2020 10:04 pm

So my hermit crabs that aren’t very big have been molting for almost 6 months than now and I’m getting kind of worried. I know I shouldn’t dig them up, but I recently moved the tank and I’m scared their tunnels collapsed. I would really like some input on this situation. Also I’m looking for an 55 gallon tank and stand in NC. Is it okay to put two different types of crabs in the same enclosure?

Hi!I would recommend smelling the tank. If there is a very rank, fishy odor, it's possible they are dead. Do they come up at night without you seeing? and yes, different species in the same tank should be fine. Have a great night :)

Thank you! The tank smells normal. So I really don’t know. Thank you for your input!

I would say it's fine. They are probably coming up at night without you seeing. :)

How deep is your sub? You might not smell them if they have passed away deep under ground.
How many crabs are down? How many are up?
SIx months is a long time for small/ tiny crabs, but it is also possible that they have come up at times and gone back down. If you don't have any crabs up, you could try smoothing out the sand to see if there are any tiny foot prints in the morning.
The danger of digging up a crab is that you might disturb it at an important time during molting. Harm is possible, and it can be fatal. But if a crab is already dead under ground, there is nothing that can be gained by digging it up.
