Can humidity be too high?
So now I’m worried my humidity is too high! My humidity is 89. Is that too high? What happens if it’s too high? And if it’s too high then how do I bring it down?

The worst thing that can happen is that mold can grow faster. Higher humidity is not harmful to crabs at all. Mine regularly runs in the 90s.

Re: Can humidity be too high?
Oh thank goodness! Since we got our Hermie and set up an awesome crabitat for him we didn’t want our 2 Glofish to feel left out so I bought them a bigger aquarium and all new glow in the dark aquarium decor. Well we finally transferred them to the new tank last night and we woke up and found both of our fishies dead! My 8 year old son has been sad all day so now I’m like extra freaking out about Hermie cuz the last thing we need is for him to die too!

Re: Can humidity be too high?
Sorry to hear about your fishes! Did you transfer the water from the old tank to the new tank? Or did you use all new water? Did you change your filter cartridges? If you changed all of the water and the filter cartridges, you would have gotten rid of all the beneficial bacteria in the tank that breaks down ammonia and nitrites. This would have caused an ammonia spike that killed your fishes. Here's an overview of the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium:

Yes I did! I put all brand new everything! So we want to get more. So should I just wait to let it cycle. Will it cycle on its own with no fish in there?

Here's a nice video that explains how to cycle your tank:
https://youtu.be/Rnnuy-f_r6E
You'll want to add appx 2-6 of the same hardy species that can survive cycling your tank (not sure how big your tank is, that's why I gave you a range):
White cloud mountain minnows
Zebra Danios
Mollies
Platies
Barbs
The fish will help kick off the cycle. Like the video mentions, adding live bacteria into your tank will help. When I moved and lost my filter and cartridges, this is what I used:
https://smile.amazon.com/Tetra-SafeStar ... 883&sr=8-1
It will help things move along faster. You should pick up a test kit too that will test for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. Once you have measurable nitrates, your tank is cycled. Then you can slowly start adding more fish.
https://smile.amazon.com/API-FRESHWATER ... est&sr=8-3
You can also use strips, they just tend not to be as accurate.
I'm also gonna tag @aussieJJDude because he is more knowledgeable than me on the technical stuff!

Ok thank you so much. I have a question. I have t emptied the old tank yet. Would it be good if a took a few cups of that water and put it in my new tank?

You're welcome!
The old water won't do much. The bacteria attaches to surfaces. Do you have the old filter cartridges? That is where the majority of the good bacteria grows. If you have those, I'd give them a quick rinse in the old tank water and pop them in the new tank.

Re: Can humidity be too high?
So the link you sent me was for tetra safe start plus. I found tetra safe start (no plus) for half the price. Would it work well enough since it’s not plus?or I also found this API quick start. It’s half the price as well on amazon and they also carry it at my local pet store for even cheaper. I’m taking a sample of my water there tomorrow and I’m wondering if I were to buy this API quick start there then would we be able to buy the fish and bring them home as well since it says ‘allows instant addition of fish’ ?

You could use either of those to help jump start the cycle. I would still only add a couple of the hardy fish species I mentioned previously. Then you'll have to test your water until there is 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and a small measurable level of nitrates. Unfortunately, the nitrogen cycle doesn't happen instantly, but those bottles of beneficial bacterial will make it go a little faster.MyelzandHermie22 wrote:So the link you sent me was for tetra safe start plus. When I lost my filter and cartridges, I had a goldfish and 4 smaller fish. I had to buy a new filter and media, and was super worried about ammonia killing them while the tank cycled. I found the tetra safe and added it to the water. I have an ammonia meter that sticks to the glass (I'll add a link for that) and thankfully, the ammonia levels never went a above "Alert: 0.05ppm". My tank was completely cycled in about 3 weeks. So the beneficial bacteria helped the cycle move a little faster and keep the ammonia levels from reaching a very dangerous level.
Here's the link for the meter. It lasts up to one year:

If you get the ammonia alert, be careful not to touch the circle in the center. That's the meter. Your finger oils will ruin it.

There are also products available that allow you to add ammonia directly without needing to use fish.

Re: Can humidity be too high?
A product that I love for aquariums is called cycle: https://smile.amazon.com/Nutrafin-Biolo ... 437&sr=8-9
Also, my humidity sits at 99% in my aquariums for my hermits. I don't have mold growth, but my aquariums are large and well established.

Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
