Hello, new crab owner here!
I've recently gotten a few very (very) small hermies.
They currently live in an aquarium with about 7" substrate (5:1 playsand/EE), the humidity is around 80-85 & temp 78-80°f
However, I recently discovered the substrate on the very top is more sandy, Possibly due to the (regular) aquarium LED drying it out? I also have an UTH on the back (above the substrate) to keep up with the temperature. The LED does give a few degrees f extra, wich are welcomed.
now for the question: The sub is pritty moist below that top 0.07", and the pencil/chopstick test is working pritty much perfect. I am however slightly worried the my little hermies legs won't be strong enough to get through the top layer?, Probably I'm worrying for nothing but better safe then sorry =)
Thanks already!

Re: New owner, with a question about substrate.
It's quite common for the top bit to be drier than what's underneath. Your crabs will be strong enough to get through it, no problem. If it was like half or even a third that was dry, then there could be the risk of a tunnel collapsing, not holding it's shape. But I would think this is fine. You could always do a light misting if you're worried.

Alright, that does make me feel a lot better. Thanks!
