saltwater and freshwater mix?

Post by sunflower_crabitat » Thu Jun 22, 2023 9:36 pm

hi! i put too much water in my two containers of water (fresh and salt) and so i used a syringe to take out some of the water but i used the same syringe for both without washing it in between, is that okay?

It shouldn't cause too much mixing so it should be fine. Hermit crabs store a mix of both fresh and salt water in their shells, so it's all going to end up mixed anyways, it's no need to worry!

I use freshwater to make my saltwater, don't know if this is necessary tho! Did you do the freshwater and then the salt?

so, i use aquafina water as my freshwater because it's purified through reverse osmosis and for the saltwater i use that same water and add a saltwater conditioner but i'm currently looking to get some instant ocean since it's better for them.

I am unaware of if aquafina is safe or not for crabs. I can tell you that most crabbers, including myself use prime for fresh water (as listed as the most popular option in the water care sheet!), you don't need much of it for the water, and it will last you a long time! Instant Ocean is the preferred salt and should be added to already primed (fresh) water. You can get a 10 gallon box of Instant Ocean at Petco for about $15, it will last you a while!

i'll look into it! thanks! from what i've read Aquafina is fine because it's purified by reverse osmosis!

The reason that we recommend using declhlorinated tap water is so that the crabs get the minerals from ground water. Distilled or RO water does not contain ground minerals.

Thank you! I knew there was a reason and I just couldn't put my finger on it! There is so much to remember! 😂

gotcha, so how do i get dechlorinated tap water? is there a specific product to use? i'm currently using the "thrive" brand for my saltwater conditioner but i want to get some instant ocean because people say that's better, but how do i get the dechlorinated tap water?
also (sorry if this is too many questions, i'm really new and very nervous lol) once i get instant ocean do i add it to straight tap water or to the already dechlorinated water?
