New Crab Grandpa

Post by CrabbyFlamm » Sat Sep 14, 2024 6:26 pm

My 14yo Daughter was recently gifted two crabs from Alabama. We've had them for a couple of months and one has molted twice but not the other one. Should we be concerned? They are in a 10g tank and within 48hrs will be moved into a 55g tank and five more buddies will purchased and added to the community (I admit, the whole expansion was my idea and she's willing to humour her old man). Should we have two sets of food/ water bowls and pools? Also where can I find pics of other crabitats and who is the best source for new shells? Thank you!!

Welcome to crabbing and to the site!
I have had good luck from Naples Sea Shells and Richard's Sea Shells - but I know that people sometimes find bags of shells in the crafts section of wal mart of hobby lobby, that are suitable for small crabs, or on Etsy or Amazon. You don't need more than one set of water bowls/ pools. You might consider two food bowls, just so that multiple crabs can eat at the same time if they want to.
How big is the one that hasn't molted?

Ugh...I thought I submitted twice. Sorry.
The small one is maybe 1.5 inches long and just under 1 inch wide. I haven't seen it in a few days and I'm wondering if I should risk interrupting a possible molting process just because I don't want it to rot in there if it's dead.

Do you mean should you dig up a crab who is underground to move to a new tank? Ideally, no. If you can maintain two tanks with heat and humidity, it is best to wait until the crab comes up on it's own. But many people aren't able to, they need stuff from the old tank to use in the new tank, so have to dig up any crabs who are underground. If you do that, be prepared to isolate them from any other crabs (even in a margarine container with holes in the lid and in the new tank).
