Unsocial crabs

Post by Ryn9 » Sun Mar 27, 2016 8:47 pm

My son brought home a hermit crab he had bought at the beach so at that moment I become a hermit crab owner, I must admit I love that little guy. At first he was wonderful, very social. Easy to handle never tried to pinch or anything. We bought two more friends for him and they're in a 20 gallon long tank. Anyway, now none will come out to play :(
I have several shells but none have had any interest in them. I change their food, fresh and salt water everyday. The humidity and temperature is good. If I get up in the middle of the night they're active. I miss playing with them. Is there anything I can do?

Unfortunately they are nocturnal by nature. So as far as I know there isn't much you can do to change when they are active. :/

As much as we love them, for the most part hermit crabs really aren't "hands on" pets. You didn't mention how long you've had the trio: if none have molted with you yet, they're still settling in and becoming familiar with their new world and with you. As time goes on, they may be a bit more active during the day but, as @Rawrgeous said, hermit crabs are primarily nocturnal. I've been crabbing for almost 8 years and still have my first crab, Felix; although all four crabs are now out and about at all hours, Felix is the only one who doesn't mind if I'm by (or in) the tank...the others would prefer that the food and water simply appear magically while they're asleep!
PPs are Big Enzo, Charles Paris and Mr Pinch
On the Big Beach in the Sky: Murray, Gino, Oscar, Gordon, Ignatz, Harry and King Felix the Pale

Crabbie, our first crab we got in December has molted. After having him 2 weeks he buried himself and we didn't see him for 8 weeks. I honestly thought he died, however since I had read about molting I kept up his food and water. Then he just reappeared. After about 2 weeks later I got him some friends, Small Fry and Daisy. I witnessed Crabbie and Small Fry have the antler fight, it was kinda cute but I worried someone would get hurt. Also when the time change happened it messed them up and I was able to see them out and about for about a minute… Anyway I was just wondering cause I see others post about the cute things theirs do!

Thanks!

Also I really want to change their home around a little bit. I have the coconut fiber down and a little bowl for sand but I'd like to put sand down on one side cause they seem to love it, especially Small Fry. So I need to remove them first. Also I have 3 in the 20 gallon, all about the size of a quarter should I get 1 or 2 more?

From what I've read on here I think sand is the best option anyway (or a mix of sand & coconut fiber-- I think if you mix it they recommend 5 parts sand to 1 part coco fiber). I'm not sure about if or how to go about removing them though because I've also seen strong suggestions about a not digging them up. Sorry :/ haha
As far as should you get 1 or 2 more-- it's not a necessity but I think you'd have the room if you wanted to Image. As they grow bigger you may to have to prepare to upgrade to a larger tank, though. I can't remember the size/number to tank ratio at the moment but I think there is a sticky on one of the crab care sub-forums. :)
