Hemet crab won't come out.
Hemet crab won't come out.
I have had my hermit crab for about three mouths now and within those three mouth I have only seen them one at a time. For only an hour and then they go back under ground. They used to be in a 10 gallon tank for a little bit but got moved around 3 weeks later. When they were in the 10 gallon tank they did the same thing. They don't eat very much or drink a lot. The temperature and humidity are good. Ether are to hight nor to low. Are they just scared of the new environment or molting?

Welcome!
New hermits often spend several weeks underground to destress and molt. It is important that they be left alone and allowed to do so.
Take a look at our care guides and feel free to follow up with any questions or concerns.

Thanks for your reply. I have read the basic care sheet from this site and many others when I first got them. I have followed everything as closely as possible, even taking extra steps to reach proper humidity levels. I bought lots of great foods from the Hermit crab Patch and rotate them so they won't get bored. Today one came out but as soon as he did he went right back down. I understand they are nocturnal, but on line it seems like everybody sees theirs at some point during the day. There are lots of videos and people even knowing which crab is which. It has been 3 months and honestly I don't remember what three of the crabs even look like. One thought is, while there are fake plants and one place to hide in and a big log to climb high on, maybe I need to give them more places to hide so they feel safe to come up???
Thanks.
Thanks.

They need lots of hiding places, yes. Some crabs just spend more time underground than others. Our E's dig and tunnel all the time.

Yes, lots of cover can help encourage them to be out more. At least in my experience. Double check that your gauges are working properly just to be sure it's not something off there. Compare the thermometer to another and here's how to test your hygrometer. Even if you tested them when you first bought them, they can get damaged and give a false reading fairly easily so it's a good idea to test them regularly.
