What Are Your Crabs' Personalities?

Post by GabyRaven » Mon Mar 06, 2017 9:51 pm

I've been watching the crabs' behavior lately since they're all freshly molted, and their personalities really started showing once they came up. They were mild before, but now Janet isn't scared of me anymore and comes right out onto my hand and walks towards me as if to say hi, and Clawford just crawls all over me whenever I pick him up to move something in the tank or clean it. He moves away from me though, but Janet really seems like she just wants attention, like she likes being held it's so weird. Tuna's still a scaredy-crab but it's whatever He's cute New guy is still underground de-stressing/possibly molting(?) so I haven't gotten a clear observation of him/her yet.

But isn't that weird how Janet just walks right up to me and almost refuses to be put down in the tank? She is so outgoing and friendly! Not scared at all! Which makes me wonder, what are your crabs' personalities like? Are they scared? Are they goofy? Are they adventurous? I'm curious to see all the differences

My hermit crab Clementine is so silly! She'll walk right up to the tank wall and watch you watch her but she's also so timid. She has one bright red foot and loved stealing the walnuts away from her brother which makes her like a little bandit . Her brother Lyle on the other hand has no fear. He loves to climb (on top of his sister) and up their tree toy. The other night he scared me because he fell from his toy into the substrate shaking the whole tank. He's okay though he'll come out no problem and he's a bit of a runner for such a big guy. Ever since Clem came up from her molt the two are inseparable always right by eachother!

Well most of my crabs are kind of indifferent and like Tuna. I have a few that stand out though- my two biggest (I wonder if crab age has something to do with personality? Maybe past events shaped them?) because both of them have strong personalities, Rocky is just all around a nice guy and always comes out to say hi while on the other hand Orchard is- I probably can't say the word on here but she is so mean! She will go after me if my hands are in the tank! She'll crawl right over all cute but as soon as you let her get too close or pick her up she pinches! (Back to the event shaping personality thing, my dad found her in a hotel room icebox, so I'm guessing her past wasn't great). And than I have Squirtle who is super curious, Beet always crawls on top of other crabs, Carrot is super shy- like I will walk by the tank and she will tuck into her shell in a hurry, and than the last notable personality is mossy who is always climbing- like you will never see her not perched awkwardly on the side of the moss pit or shell shop. And I am still figuring the other 14 out

Ahaha aw orchard, that's like my dog he'll come up asking for pets and then he'll turn around and bite your hand off (he's tiny so it's fine lol) Rocky sounds like the sweet grandfather who chuckles when other crabs do something stupid Image You have so many crabs I'm sure it's a constant show for you!

My hermies, Sam and Dean, have very different personalities.
Dean is a mellow type, he comes out every now and then. I have to hold him for about an hour until he comes out to play. He makes noise very rarely. When he was just by himself (prior to Sam's rescue) he was outgoing and playful and actually would sit on my shoulder and watch TV with me. But, a few months after I got Sam, Sam attacked him and took one of his legs and half of an antennae. I was at school at the time. Since then, he is very skiddish and shy. Since then, he has grown his leg back, but his antennae remains as a stub.
He really likes to sit underneath a large, upside-down 'V' of driftwood I got for him. His crabitat is by the window, so he sits underneath his 'V' and stares out into the yard.

Sam is extremely outgoing, and L-O-U-D. She is constantly chirping at me, from the moment I come home, all the way through "play-time" (when i handle my hermies) and all night. Her tiny voice has become the soundtrack to my daily life. In fact, when she goes silent, I immediately perk to attention. She clinks against her glass all night, scrambling around her crabitat happily chirping. She doesn't ever hide in her shell (very rarely, only around new handlers) and she is fast. She has only shown aggression once, but she's very docile now that the two are in separate crabitats. They play together for an hour each day. (Closely monitored by myself.)

Haha love the names! Dean didn't go back to his outgoing personality after being separated from Sam? I wonder why she attacked him. Sam sounds a lot like my Clawford, hardly ever goes in his shell and always makes tons of noise Image Love it!

Lola is a somewhat feisty but skittish and social girl. She never ducks in her shell or pinches when she's scared, she flails like a fish out of water. She is the easiest to hold though and is usually on the surface on the substrate.

Brigadier is sort of a loner and she's scared of people now, she digs most of the time but she's very curious and adventurous and athletic when she wants to be. When she comes up at night, it's always for a drink.

Harley is a stubborn, feisty, but very lovable hermie. She's kind of interesting..she has pinched me and peed on me!

There's a lot more to the hermies than I wrote here, but it's hard to put their personalities and quirks into words sometimes, haha.
Rest in peace, Brigadier (adopted on 9/21/15)
Rest in peace, Lola (9/21/15) (adopted on 9/21/15)
Rest in peace, Harley (adopted on 4/29/16)
Rest in peace, Acuff (adopted in 5/20)

Hahaha that's awesome! Never been peed on so I'll count that as a blessing Image your crabs sound incredibly similar to my gang lol, there's so many distinct personalities to our Hermies! Image

I have four, Thing 1 my biggest and oldest is a total jerk. He is nice when the pecking order is observed but I can't introduce new crabs that are bigger than him or he tries to kill them. Also the smaller ones are a bit afraid of him.

Stitch, she is my other PP and second largest, has been super shy her whole life and i got her when she was about as big as my pinky nail. Every time she grows she gets a little more outgoing. I went from never seeing her, to seeing her in her shell, to seeing her freeze, to seeing her walk around, to taking pictures of her shell, to taking pictures of her freezing and now she will actually run towards my hand when im feeding its so cool.

Apache, is my outgoing E. Will literally climb on everything, and never runs away or goes into his shell. He idolizes thing 1 and i have observed him following him around the tank.

Lakota, my shy E, is almost always in his shell, will always run away and freezes anytime anything moves.
