do your crabs seem to enjoy watching you?

Post by ROSIEonFIRE » Sat Apr 28, 2018 1:52 pm

I don't know about you guys but sometimes I get the feeling that my crabs like being in a place where they can see what is going on outside of their tat. All of my crabs are fairly shy and skittish. There are a ton of places in the tank where they can hide and be totally out of sight but I frequently see them sitting in this one corner of the tank that is a little exposed and faces our living room. I don't think it has to do with temperature differential because the temperature is pretty similar in the 'tv corner' as I call it and the back of the tank where they can hide. I can't help but feel like they just like having something interesting to look at. What do you guys think?

I have my tank in the closet, and all the crabs see me doing is getting dressed 8)
Otherwise, they do not find me interesting enough to watch me :)

Mine seem to enjoy watching the events in ApartmentLand. I think of it as environmental enrichment.

Omg my Ruggie likes to sit in the corner and stare at me some nights. She did it constantly when we first brought her home, it was so creepy!

We have our E's tank in the living room and I swear I caught one of them watching TV. I generally keep the living room on the dark side and put their night light on so the TV would be the brightest thing. I don't think they really care what I'm up to though. Usually if I peek in they either run away or tuck in their shells.

I often wondered how well they can actually see.

My crabs seem to watch me all the time. I'll be sitting on my bed reading or something and Magnus or Shelby will sit there and watch me. Then when I go up to the tank Magnus will seem to show off, he will climb things really quickly and will make sure I'm watching. It's quite funny really.

One time one of my friends were over and Magnus saw her and hung off my teapot house with one leg!

Mine seem pretty absorbed by their own business... that wheel isn't gonna walk itself.

Nope, even though I don't pick them up, they have their instincts of running to the nearest hide, unless they are in a wheel, then they keep walking, or sit still.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Can you remember the last time you picked one up?

Yes, to take a picture last year for my storefront. It wasn't very pleased with me either!! The time before that it was when I had upgraded tanks. It's not a normal occurrence!

That’s a long time! I don’t enjoy handling my crabs, which is why I touch them only when it’s needed. I haven’t touched one of my crabs in about three months. I will need to in the coming months ahead, as I’ll be adding substrate, moving the tank, and installing a topper :)
