Chirping

Post by Julsie » Thu Jan 30, 2020 5:11 am

Sometimes and not very often I will hear chirping coming from the tank for about 15 seconds and then it stops. I read they do this when frightened or annoyed. Is that true? Is there other reasons they might be chirping? Should I be worried?

From my experience, I think the chirping is normal occasionally. I rarely have heard the crabs chirping, and when I went to investigate my crabs were just sitting in the corner. They didn't seem in harm or anything, so I have to say that I believe it's normal sometimes.

Chirping

Mine rarely chirp! But- yes. When they’re annoyed or in danger/scared they will chirp sometimes! Or for fun or for communication. Any of those reasons and likely more we don’t know! Usually if I hear chirping it’s because someone is mad at someone else for doing something they don’t approve of, like getting a piggyback when they aren’t in the mood! It’s usually ok, but I would recommend just taking a peek if you do hear it and see if someone is in distress over something.

I just heard some chirping tonight for a few seconds. There is only one crab in the wheel and no one else is around. I have heard it during mating and brought an attempted shell jacking to my attention. It may be one of those things that's interchangeable based on the situation. Like Overthemountain1 said if you hear it it's not a bad idea to see whats going on.

I had one that randomly chirped until his following moult. Walk past the tank? Chirp. Truck past the house? Chirp. Bird chirp? Chirp. It was weird and funny and thankfully didn't last!

It is true that chirping is their panic mode and should always be investigated. It's alerted me to many fights and shelljackings over the years. However, every so often they do it and we don't know why.

I even had a tank of molters once that chirped to each other all night every night for the 8 weeks they were down, and every crab came back up intact and within a few days of each other. I swear they were coordinating.

Or plotting their world domination. You know.

That’s too funny- random chirps from the peanut gallery! Image
