Hello everyone. I'm currently new to having crabs and I had a few questions about the behavior of some new hermit crabs I had gotten. My current setup is a 55 gallon tank. I have two 1 gallon tanks on one side, one with fresh water and one with salt water, with ramps in them so the crabs can get out easily. For substrate I have a playsand/EE mixture. I did a mixture of 50lbs of sand to 1 brick of EE. For the substrate level I have the pool side at about 6 inches and the far side slopes up going to about 11 inches. The temps and humidity for the tank are around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and 80-85% humidity.
I originally got 4 crabs a little under a month ago. When I first got the crabs they all did some exploring of the tank and then 3 of them would burrow down and come back up throughout the day and night and continue exploring and eating. One of the crabs(the largest of the 4) spent the most time eating and I have never seen it fully bury itself. The most it has done is dig a small hole that it would lay in for a bit then come back out and eat then lay somewhere else. The others typically would fully bury themselves in the substrate then pop up in random places to move around and eat. Recently one of the middle sized crabs buried itself next to one of the pools but didn't fully dig down and left the top semi-exposed. I know the crab is still alive because it periodically will reorient itself in the hole to either be looking out of the hole or have its back to it. The largest crab appears to be eating less than when it first arrived and now spends most of its time just sitting in spots in the substrate. It is just digging out little divots instead of digging holes now and laying in them. I have not seen the smallest crab for about 3 days now when before it would come up at night to wander around and eat. The other middle sized crab seems to only come up at night now when it used to be very active throughout the day and night and once it comes out it appears to just move somewhere and hide. Is this behavior normal for new crabs or should I be worried?

Re: Unsure about new crab behavior.
Hi there!
It all sounds normal to me. They are likely acclimating to their new surroundings. Each crab has their own way of destressing, which may be to burrow or just stay in the same spot and hang out.
