Rescue mission

Post by LindaLou » Sat Oct 09, 2021 4:13 pm

Ok so I have 2 smallish crabs and just adopted a jumbo in need of a new loving home. Is it a good idea to put him in with my small ones?

I would say it's fine... Crab Central Station (YouTube channel.) Keeps Brevis and E's together (even though the Jumbo might be bigger.) and I just found this:

Can you mix hermit crab species?
'You can keep hermit crabs of different sizes together as long as your substrate depth accommodates your largest crab being able to completely bury when he needs to molt. Your crab cage will be more active with several or more crabs, but at the very least do not have less than two.'

Though some of that is pretty obvious if your a crabber!

They’ll probably get along so long as their needs are met, including space.

So far so good. I used 2 wooden bridges tied together to make a second level.

We have large and small crabs together and don't have any issues. If anything bigger crabs don't see little ones as a threat since they won't be in competition for similar shells.

As for different species co existing. Yes they can live together. We keep purples and E's together. We do occasionally have two that seem to have a love/hate relationship. It is only those two. We also keep straws and purples together, and a ruggie and purples. The issues we have seen are more from two strong willed crabs, not one species being singled out by another.

And I'm in the process of lookin for either a 40 or 55 gal tank so I know they have plenty space! I have a 29 gal right now, with like I said the bridge second level. ImageImage

The big guy is def a PP. He has the eyes and it looks like his leg is heavily armored the way it is with PP's. He also has a lot of setae. Congrats of the future upgrade! Your crabs are really cute! :D
