Molting or eaten?

Post by Misombra » Sun Jul 03, 2022 12:29 pm

After losing 2 crabbies due to a bacterial bloom, I got 2 others because I didnt want my Scooby to be lonely. The other 2 were visible and they ate a lot which I knew a molt was coming.

After those 2 went into molting, my Scooby also disappeared for a bit. Scooby has been out and about for a few months now but I have not seen the other 2.

No smells has surface, and I'm scared if they are still molting after months now (is that even possible?) That I will mess it up.

I feel no smells = no death, but if Scooby are them, I guess no smells will happen.

What to do!

How long exactly have they been down? It's not entirely uncommon for crabs to spend months down (and only resurface at night, then go back down again) to chill, moult and then chill some more before coming back up. New crabs in particular are known to 'destress' by staying for a good month underground after being purchased, where it is relatively common for these crabs to preform a moult right after the destress period.

After seeing my last post here and doing some math, it seems probably 6 months, which I didn’t think it was that long since I got the new ones.

What size are your crabs and when did they last molt? Usually smaller hermit crabs molt more frequently, but usually only stay under for a few weeks, but larger crabs don't molt as often, however when they do molt they can molt longer, sometimes they even take a few months! Recently my small hermit crabs both molted simultaneously and stayed under for longer than usual and I was worried that one had eaten the other, but it turned out they had finished molting and had just decided to stay under and dig around :) . Maybe you could try staying up later to see if your crabs are coming up to eat at night

One was small and the other one a big bigger but smaller than my Scooby. I havent dig, but still no smells whatsoever. Unless they are literally hiding, food has been eaten, Scooby is just out and about he is not shy day or night. I'll check later at night and see if they might be shy.

I got new food in, and it got destroyed in no time, unless Scooby really liked it, it was weird he ate all that by himself 🤷‍♀️

If it seems like the food is disappearing then the crabs are probably okay and just hiding
