Hermit crab buried for months

Post by th3realninboi » Sun Apr 14, 2024 10:06 pm

My Hermit Crab has been buried for about 6 months now, I’m pretty sure he molted about a month before he buried himself. I don’t smell anything, should I be concerned or just let him do his thing?

Are you absolutely certain he has not come up and gone back down during that time? The only way you can really be certain is if you have a camera watching the tank 24/7. Or if he is the only crab in the tank and you smoothed out the sand and there have been no foot prints.
If he is dead, there is nothing to be gained by digging him up. If he is molting, you risk injuring him if you dig him up.

He is the only one in his tank and the sand hasn’t disturbed at all from what I’ve seen. I don’t want to dig him up but I fear he may be dead.

If you are certain, then six months is generally too long, even for jumbo crabs. There is no harm in waiting a bit longer, just to be sure tho.
