Does my crab hate her food?

Post by Housecat » Mon Sep 30, 2024 7:59 pm

I recently got a new hermie and she's currently in iso. She seems to be thriving, and she always eats her fresh fruit, but she only ate her hermit crab feed (affectionately referred to as kibble) once on the first day. Ever since then, she seems to be deliberately covering up her kibble, either by kicking sand over it or placing a spare shell on top of it (it's served in a clam shell). Does she hate the kibble, or is she trying to stash it?
On another note, she drags all her spare shells about half way under the sand every night (there's five of them). Is this just boredom?
She's lively and active and seems to be adjusting fairly well, so I'm not necessarily worried, just curious.

Why is she in iso?
Crabs are weird, they like to make a mess of the tank. Be sure to offer a variety of foods, include animal protein daily, as well as sources of calcium, nuts, seeds, fruits, veggies, grains, greens, flowers, eggs, etc. Most pellets contain preservatives that can be harmful long term, so probably best to steer clear of those.

She's in transitionary isolation because she's brand new. Also my resident crab is molting. I actually gave her a bit of chicken since posting and she got right down on that. I'll switch her protein from the kibble to something better and see if she stops hiding it ;p
