Is this a hermit crab myth?

Where we discuss the behavior of our hermit crabs, as in fights, pecking orders, shell swaps, etc. Please post all naked-crab posts in the Emergency forum.

Is this a hermit crab myth?

Post by LavendarCrab » Sat Oct 26, 2024 3:08 pm

In an article I was reading:

"On the other end of the spectrum, an overabundance of calcium-rich foods can also contribute to cannibalism. Hermit crabs, especially the larger species, require a diet rich in calcium to support shell growth and development. When they consume excessive amounts of calcium-rich foods, it can lead to an imbalance in their digestive system. This imbalance can cause digestive issues, stress, and aggressive behavior, ultimately increasing the likelihood of cannibalism. A balanced diet is key to maintaining a healthy and peaceful hermit crab community."

I didn't think that hermit crabs would eat too much of a type of food, but that they will only consume what they need, so long as you make the nutrients they need consistently available to them.

I do doubt that claim, unless it was a scientific article. But I haven't read anything yet to support that claim. I do agree that an imbalance of nutrients will cause issues, this has been documented in pretty much all living organisms.

This article is absolutely terrible. It has blatant errors, no scientific backing, no references, and is written by a self proclaimed 'fish enthusiast' who doesn't even know her crab species let alone how to possibly care for them.
