suddenly burrowing and not eating

Post by Kermitandplum » Sun May 18, 2025 11:34 am

Hi all! about 2-3 weeks ago I noticed my hermit crabs didn't eat anything from their food plate, but I shrugged it off. When I offered food again and checked on it the next day I noticed that they didn't eat any either. Then both of them started burrowing. Plum came up after three days and I gave him food again, but he didn't eat any and re-burrowed shortly after. Then a week later Kermit came up and I offered him food too, but he didn't eat and reburrowed the next day! Both of them reemerged later but didn't eat anything before going back down. They're down right now. I know they're not eating because they usually make a huge mess and leave food everywhere. they don't burrow often and they love their food...this behavior is really unlike them i'm kinda stressing. :(

btw I feed them fresh fruits veggies and meat/bloodworms and I change the food every 1-2 days.

Thanks yall! -Alice

Crabs will know what they need, and will eat accordingly. You could increase the variety of foods you are feeding. Add some greens, leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts, grains, eggs, eggshells, etc.

Thanks. So the burrowing is also okay? Are they both getting ready for a molt?

They for sure could be getting ready for a molt - when was the last time they molted?
