Aussie Colorings

Post by Guest » Sat Sep 15, 2007 7:38 am

Hey guys,
Was just wondering what colors our Aussie friends range in.
Most of mine are light browns or dark browns, but i have one guy who is white as white, almost blue white? Is that normal. does it mean he has or hasnt molted, how can i tell if my guys have or havent molted, my guys dont really bury at all so im a bit unsure, but i was just curious about this one guys coloring because hes like a albino Lol.

Thanks Aussiemum ( Belinda)

Bugger, i need a new camera ! i was going to add pics of him but they were all blury.
You maybe able to see him on a previous post , he has a Bright Green Horrid Painted Shell.

They really seem to come in a large variety of colours. Maybe thats why they are called variabilis? I have seen white ones, orange ones, dark ones, striped ones, and combinations of those!

since ive been in australia (2 or 3 months), most of the aussies that i have seen have been bone white like you described. when i purchased them, three teenies and a medium were completely white. one of the teenies has since molted and come up a nice brown color though. im not sure if the coloring is more nutritional, as it is for PPs in the US, or more random like it is for ruggies.

Hi Annopia,
Yes i looked at ure pics, the premolt pic is simular to coloring but this guy has got lighter and lighter , he has buried down so maybe he was ready to molt. I havent had one molt for me yet so im not real knowledgable there.

How long are you here is Aussie for?
I have a friend from Michigan who plans to come over as soon as she can make some arrangements for her husband and kids to be looked aftet Lol.

If only she could bring over some of ure fellow crabbies.

well, if his exo got lighter while you had him, it could be that his exo is beginning to separate from the rest of his body. i know that in PPs that can happen, giving a lighter appearance at the joints, like in this picture of big'un:

especially on his bp you can see the white around the edges where the exo is seperating. post molt these white areas turned orangey and lost the white coloring:

so, while white can be a normal color for an aussie, if youre hermie has gotten more and more white since youve got him, he's probably premolt. watch for digging! hehe, at one point two weeks ago all my four aussies were down molting, kinda boring.

im studying at UNSW in Sydney for a semester, i got here in july and i'll be here through november. whereabouts do you live? i am still needing to find a home for my wee ones once i leave, and it seems like all the hca and csj member in australia are in queensland.

hehe, i would have brought you some american crabbies if i could have  . back in the states ive got PPs, Es, Ruggies, and straws, that my mom is taking care of while im gone.

I have seen some incredibly bright orange and deep chocote brown aussies. One of mine, Golem, was very orange/brown when I bought him. Many people think its the carotene content of their diet which determines thier colour, which does make sense.
